I counted 8 going to San Antonio, 7 going to Wright Patt, 9 deferrals and 1 with nothing but emergency medicine written next to his name.

That isn't too different than it has been the past few years. I'm surprised they found that many slots at Wright Patt though, it used to be 4 per year.

While it is interesting to see the "numerators" for each specialty, what I'd really like to know is the "denominator," that is, how many WANTED an EM slot?

Integrated Forecast Board had listed 8 slots for San Antonio, 6 for Dayton, and 6 civilian deferrals so that's an interesting pick-up about the numbers being different. There seemed to be a LOT more MS IV's who matched than last yr (when there were no civilian deferrals). The people who have EM by their name but no location have A's for "alternate" (no match unless someone drops out I guess?) and these people seem to be O-3. When I interviewed at WP, one of the faculty said the applications were numbering in the mid-50s. At SAUSHEC they said they had almost 110 applicants btwn the 2 services so my guess is mid50s for the AF.

I confirmed "over 50" today. That makes for a match rate of just less than 50%, which is about what it was a few years ago when I applied. Compare that to the civilian match rate of ~93%, and you'll see just how much of a challenge the military match can be, especially for a medical student applicant (as opposed to a GMO or a previously residency trained doc).

Congratulations to all who matched and condolences to those who did not. I hope you take comfort in knowing how competitive it was.

According to the 2008 AF IFB (for the 2009 match) for EM there are:

8- SAUSHEC; 6- WP/WS; 17- Def/Rdef

Wow! I'm sure there are lots of happy/relieved people out there today. I hope everyone who previously did not get an EM spot gets one this year. I also wonder tho what accounts for this huge disparity compared to previous yrs? They usually alternate every other yr allowing civilian deferrals and since there were some this past match, I was anticipating none this time.

Radiology seems to be a similar situation. There are 7 deferrals for 2008. They didn't offer any deferrals in 07 or 06. So hopefully this is a good sign. By the way what does def/Rdef mean? What is the Rdef?
