AF Match Question

I'm a pre-med who is strongly considering AFHPSP. I have done alot of reading and research on these forums, as well as spoken to a recruiter. My question comes from something the recruiter said. Through reading tjhrough many threads, it seemed very clear that with the army one would have the best chance of avoiding GMO and getting into residency. However, the recruiter told me that in the AF I could match into any military residency and would not be limited to only AF residencies. The recruiter specifically stated that I shouldn't believe this 'army myth'. Is this true? If so, could someone briefly explain how applying for residencies with other branches works?

No, he is spinning the story in such a way so as to make it virtually useless if not outright misleading. You cannot just apply to any service's residency program. Say you want to do peds. You can't apply to Tripler just because it would be nice to be in Hawaii (and to avoid GMO). You can apply for the AF peds residency positions, the AF positions that have been routinely alotted to Naval Med. Ctr. Portsmouth since Katrina and, this year to a few spots at the joint Navy-Army program in DC (as well as for some deferred-to-civilian positions). But if the AF has no spots at another service's facility (or if it isn't a joint-service program), you can't apply there (There might be some occasions when exceptional circumstances have overridden this, but that would be the exception, not the rule). Your chance of GMO is definitely Navy>>>>AF>Army. No myth.
