So... Someone who I very much respect, and has been instrumental in me getting to were I am - has been pushing for me to join HSVMA (Humane Society Veterinary Medical Association)... Not sure how I feel about it (ok, i know how I feel about it).

Is it as bad as I think they are? or are they in the middle? if I join, will it/can it have lasting repercussions for me?

I don't really know much about the organization, but if you are this uncomfortable about joining, why do it? Is there something that you might be able to get out of it besides the fact that your 'mentor' (i use quotations because i'm not sure if this is what you consider this person) suggests that you join.

I know that my mentor is involved with various different organizations and has suggested i look into and consider joining one or two... i looked into them, and will continue to explore them, but am keeping away until i get to vet school and hear other professionals opinions.

Good luck with deciding.:luck:

Yeah - you could certainly call him my mentor in terms of veterinary medicine (gave me my first (vet) job, supported my studies, time off when needed, wrote an excellent letter for rec., ect.), but he is also involved with PETA, HSUS, and various other animal rights groups.

I am virulently against those idea's and organizations - and we've gotten into a few good debates about it. He also believes that by straddling the Animal Rights cause, he can push for change that lands somewhere in the middle (Not a philosophy I agree with).

Because of all of these 'extreme' organizations, I am reluctant to join - (He has never asked and knows better then to recommend PETA or the like), but I just don't know where this organization stands... I know what they SAY (read their website), but not sure about the 'real deal'.

HSVMA is an alignment between HSUS and AVAR, so I'm pretty sure that if you don't agree with the animal rights philosophy you probably don't belong there.
