last summer i attempted to take physics I at the cc near home. some really crappy personal stuff went down, and i had to take a W or certainly risk failing.

does dschool have to see this when i'm applying? (i'm going to take I and II this summer at stony and get a's if it kills me) if so, what'll it do to me?

yes, physics was the only thing i've taken at a cc, and no, it didn't get connected to my school's transcript. so then..... ?

Yes, dschools will see the W on your cc transcript. Honesty is the best policy; you're supposed to include all college transcripts when filling out AADSAS and you sign a statement that says, "I attest that I have not withheld or falsified any information, by penalty of yada yada yada."

As long as the rest of your application/grades are strong, I wouldn't worry about it. I've got a semester of W's, explained my situation briefly in my PS, and start dschool this summer.

Good luck!

I would say you are 99% fine, they will never know unless you did something to connect them. To be sure you could probably call up the CC and change your address and any Identification things, phone number, address, whatever you can
So much for integrity and ethics, eh?

ugh. what if they think my explanation is lame, as honest as i'd be? i'm kind of an iffy applicant too, gpa-wise, though my grades have gotten much better over the last 2 years. thanks for the help

Hell, my poor grades and Ws basically boiled down to being at the wrong school and immature (like every other typical 18-20 year old).

You've got a few choices: don't submit the transcript, submit the transcript and ignore it, submit the transcript and mention it in your PS ("I had to withdraw from my summer physics class due to personal reasons).

Your strong upward trend speaks more of your accomplishments than a bad summer! Make sure the rest of your app is strong and you should be fine.

Do not lie, or leave out things on your AADSAS... you could get your acceptance pulled, and yes schools do that.

I had several withdrawls, several being for classes that I decided not to take.

The Ws will show up on your transcript, but if you go and get As in core classes like Physics I and II that you withdrew from the first time around, you'll be fine. All that will matter to schools is those aced courses.

There really is nothing to worry about. One W isn't exactly something that's going to raise eyebrows. As long as your transcript isn't littered with W's, there's nothing to woory about and even less to explain.

thanks for all the input, guys! i feel a lot better now.

I had 6 W's, (third time's a charm for Calculus), and I can definitely say that people completely over exaggerate W's. It never came up at an interview, and I didn't mention it in my statement, but I did retake the classes I dropped. Don't stress about a single W, Adcoms won't blink an eye.

But, if you do purposely not send in that transcript, and you get accepted at one of the schools that thoroughly looks into your background before you start there, you'll be completely screwed, and likely unable to be accepted at any dental schools ever again. Don't be dumb and try to trick them about it.

So in summary, don't stress about the W! 😀
