I watch shows and read all the time of doctors and paramedics. I'm not talking ER here i'm talking TLC, Discover, Discovery Health, and I've read plenty of things on the subject. I love people and I want to be able to be in a situation and be able to help somebody. I more than have the interest to become a doctor but it's the science that scares me. I hate plant and anything inorganic crap but I love studying about humans and what makes us tick. What exactly are the sciences like and the MCAT's... those are my two biggest fears. Is it interesting? Or is it boring? Sorry to bother you all but thanks in advance.

hi,
this is my opinion. the sciences are hard but can be fun. there were times when i hates studying organic but when i finally understood a concept it was like wow, that's pretty cool. it feels good when you see the product of your efforts and you like what you see.
mcats are another ballgame. hate is my only word.
good luck

I think you're going to have to learn to love the science part about it, but it sounds like you have plenty of time. It's a great start that you love helping people, but a love of science (or at least a tolerance) is the other crucial part of becoming a physician. Are you in high school or a non-sci major? Take a couple of science courses and see what you think. It's a different style of thinking than in the humanities, but I think they compliment each other well.
As for the MCATs, well, they're a necessary evil. It's definitely a rough test . . . and a fabulous feeling when their finished. Best of luck.

Welcome to the ranks of hopeful future doctors!

It's good that your desire to be a doctor stems from a desire to help people. That's a good starting point. As for the science, some of it is complicated, but it's all manageable if you work at it. There will be some topics in which you'll be completely disinterested, but a lot of those subjects help you to understand the bigger questions and the more complex (but seemingly more relevant) topics. For example, physics gives you insight into biomechanics and lots of processes at microscopic levels. And you can't get through organic without knowing general chem, etc.

But don't worry about it too much before you even get started, do what you can when you face the work, and you'll be able to decide then if it's right for you.

It's really hard to judge what you like until you dig deeper into a subject. I never thought I would like genetics & immunology until I take classes in those areas for my major. Now I'm thinking about specializing in one of those areas.

I couldn't agree more! 🙂

Try not to look so far down the road that you discourage yourself. Organic chemistry comes in when you have "mastered" the basics of chemistry. (I have not had Orgo yet either. 😉 ) But a lot of people have taken it and lived to tell the story. I think it will be time consuming but hopefully doable.

"You can't judge a book by it's cover." Who knows? You might take it, enjoy and slap yourself for not majoring in chemistry! 😀

I never thought I would like Clinical Science. However, when my Dad was diagnosed with cancer I was surfing the web for information and now I have been trying for over a year (really!!) to change majors and still graduate 'on time'. I am now trying to get all of my basic science out of the way so I can take some courses I really enjoy.

I am definitely considering specializing (if medschool is sucessful!) in Immunology or Infectious Disease.

Good Luck!

P.S. The MCAT doesn't come until you've had a good background in the sciences. 🙂
