I was wondering what are the career opportunity after u have completed pg in aiims (after serious labor of course) both in India and foreign ???
To work in foreign countries (like US) is it better to try for Aiims or in the countries itself for pg???

I may presume "aiims" means All India Institute of Medical Sciences?

I assume "pg" means post-graduate?

I may presume you are asking what your job opportunities are for post-graduate training in the US and other foreign countries after completing your degree at AIIMS?

It depends on too many factors to list here: what your specialty training goals are, entrance exam scores, etc. There are many many threads about getting into specialty training in the US which, if this is your goal, you should review (as a complete discussion here is out of the scope of this thread, or what i can post this morning).

Perhaps you could clarify what exactly you are considering so we can better assist you.

First of all, why would you want to do PG from AIIMS or any other country if you ultimately want to practice in the US ? I presume you've completed MBBS but are debating whether to do PG or not. The anwer is, it would not make a whole lot of difference. If it's the US you want to go to, give the USMLEs, use the AIIMS network (which is probably the largest of all medical schools within India whose grads are in the US) and try and get a residency match. If you do PG, it just means more number of years since your graduation and you will have to answer to tough questions like "Why USA ?" or more importantly, "Why NOT India?". PDs like determined graduates with one track mind towards practicing medicine in the US. I know of orthopedicians who moved to the states and had to settle for Internal Medicine. So, IMHO, decide what your ultimate goal in life is.

Alot, like WS said, also depends on which specialty you want to get into. FMGs almost never make it into very competitive specialties like Dermatology. Primary care should definitely be within reach especially coming from a world renowned institute like AIIMS.

First of all thank you guys for your time..
What I exactly wanted to say is that after finishing my graduation, I want to be a surgeon. And would it be better for me to try for AIIMS for pg then only think about going abroad for work or try to have further study from beginning in abroad? And would it make much difference if only after completing my pg here I go to abroad? Will my education here will be recognized?
Last of all is the life standard and income range much different if pg and further work is done in India 🙂xf:AIIMS itself ) or abroad (may be US or Canada or so on other countries) ?
I am in great dilemma so I will be very grateful if you guys can give me your valuable suggestions..........

Your medical degree will be recognized in the US (as noted above, AIIMS has a lot of graduates working in the US).

If you wish to be a surgeon in the US however, do not do surgical training in India. Currently, we are moving toward more required certification by the American Board of Surgery. You cannot be Board Certified if you have trained outside of the US. More recently, the American Board of Surgery (ABS) decided to allow up to 2 years credit for any training done abroad; however, you have to be in a US surgical training program to apply for and receive that credit. There are rare exceptions in which someone who has completed their training abroad is allowed to work in the US as a surgeon; in most cases you will be expected to repeat your entire training curriculum.

Therefore, your first task is to decide where you want to LIVE and PRACTICE. If it is in the US, then review the steps for getting into US training at www.ecfmg.org, www.usmle.org and www.nrmp.org

Surgical training can be somewhat difficult for an FMG to get into in the US, but not impossible.

Your income and lifestyle in the US is not based on where you trained; as I noted above, for all intents and purposes, your surgical training abroad will not be recognized and you need to do that training here if your intent is to work in the US. I cannot speak about Canada or other countries. The US is an insurance based company and surgical work is based on insurance reimbursement for certain procedure codes; you do not make more if you go to a more prestigious training program. Everyone makes the same (with some regional variation).

best of luck to you...

thank you very much for your reply......my aim is to practice for about 10-12 years in US and to come back and work in homeland.
So will you please suggest me whether I should do my pg in India or try to do it in US ?

Again, in most cases you cannot work in the US unless you have done your post-grad training here. There are a few exceptions but the most common and easiest way is to do your residency here. I cannot say whether or not that training would be recognized in India.
