I understand how PTE and CTE both work. My question is this: if you have one A now, and then get a second A in May, how long do you have to narrow down to one, without risking your offers being rescinded? Is there a grace period?

after April 30th, I believe it is school specific. For example you're holding on to an A from school A after April 30th. Then lets say May 3rd you get an acceptance from school B and they say u have 48 hours to accept. For those 48 hours you can hold on to 2 acceptances until you decide

This ^^^^. AAMC guidelines say one week, until 30 days before orientation, when it goes down to two days, but individual schools can do whatever they want. Remember, enforcement is in the hands of the new A school, since your preexisting PTE school cannot see WLs or As; it's WLs and As that can see PTEs/CTEs. So, you can hold the new As as long as the new schools allow you to before they require a decision (PTE/CTE).

If you switch your existing PTE to the new school without withdrawing from the old school, you can be sure the old PTE school will receive notification of that move from AAMC almost immediately (if not, they can run a report to see it at any time), and take the appropriate action. Bottom line, the amount of time you can hold multiple acceptances after 4/30 is entirely in the hands of the new A school.

I'll add one point based on brokebuthopeful's post solely for clarity. If you accept school B offer in 5 minutes (and not 48 hours), you must then withdraw from school A immediately. Granted, I would personally wait until the acceptance is noted in the CYMS tool and you can select PTE before withdrawing. School B will have to do the 'paperwork' before you can select them as PTE. I've had one school take a day and another take a week (though it will likely be quicker after 4/30 as schools want to figure out their class). School B would likely not withdraw your acceptance when they see both schools (well, maybe after a few days they would call or something) , but school A likely would.

Yes, but, and this seems to be a point of huge confusion for a lot of people, school A will not see the school B acceptance (and, even if it did, it wouldn't automatically rescind you if you just received it!) until it becomes a PTE or CTE. The point of confusion is that people seem to think all schools where you have As or WLs can see that you have other As and WLs -- they can't!!! What they can see is if you have selected PTE/CTE at another school. So school B can see that you have PTE somewhere (but not where).

School A, the school where you have already selected PTE, cannot see anything, because you don't have a PTE or CTE anywhere else. They cannot see your WLs, and won't see if one or more of them become As.

Enforcement is in the hands of the WL schools. After you select CTE, they are supposed to kick you off the WL if you don't withdraw, but the CTE school will not see if you stay on WLs. If a school accepts you off the WL and doesn't give you a deadline to make a decision (this won't happen!), you'd be able to keep both As indefinitely, because the existing PTE school will not see the new A until it becomes a PTE/CTE.
