I finished my fall semester of my sophomore and my GPA is now standing at a 3.4. I don't know how I feel about this, I thought I could raise it up higher to a 3.5. I'm afraid that there's not enough time to raise my GPA to a competitive one for medical school. I basically have 3 more semesters until I apply for med schools. I live in Texas and really want to be accepted in state.

Ok...? I think the part where ask the question is missing..

Okay, well I'm Asian American and I don't know if I will be competitive for Texas medical schools. What would be a competitive GPA and MCAT for Texas medical schools and do I have a chance with the current GPA i'm sitting with?

TMDSAS publishes some statistics a year or two back about the GPAs of applicants and matriculants. The percentages of applicants who matriculated in GPA brackets were as follows:

  • GPA 3.76+ ___ 53.5%
  • 3.6 - 3.75 ___44.1%
  • 3.51 - 3.59 ___ 37.9%
  • 3.41 - 3.5 ___ 29.8%
  • 3.31 - 3.4 ___ 21.4%
  • 3.16 - 3.3 ___ 17.2%
  • 2.76 - 3.0 ___ 5.0%
  • 2.6 - 2.75 ___5.7%
  • < 2.6 ___ 3.9%
Total 36.0%

** This is applicants who matriculated, not acceptances. For Texas, the two should be pretty close

30% chance. So if you apply to at least 3 schools, chances of you getting in are like 90%. Go for it!

I'm just a sophomore, I have 3 more semesters before I apply.

Then just do your best in all of your classes during those next three semesters.

I get the impression that you made this thread so we could respond with either "It's okay, you'll be fine' or "Give up; it's over". As you said yourself, you have three more semesters, so any response along these lines would be inaccurate; they usually are inaccurate in general.

Reevaluate aspects of your life and ask yourself if any change can improve productivity and academics. As I'm sure you know, GPA isn't the only factor that determines an acceptance; focus on developing yourself as a better applicant as a whole. I'm sure you really want to be accepted in state, but there are many other students who want the same thing. Unless you're suffering from unusual circumstances, you can do it if you really want to.

There's alwways time to raise it higher. Keep inmind that 3.4 is in stirking distance of acceptability for many MD schools, even if, say, Baylor or UTxSW are out of reach. And there's always TCOM.

You are kidding about the 90%, right? 😵 The <50% matriculant statistics above generally apply to an applicant who has applied to all 7 of the schools bundled into the TMDSAS data (Baylor and TCOM are not included). True, some applicants will omit a school or two, but probably not very many.
