After Georgetown SMP Program

I wished to find out the information with regards to this, once you are a student in the Georgetown SMP program, you get scores above a certain margin (top 10-15%), are you guaranteed an interview? If yes, are you given a preferential shot at admission into Georgetown?

I was offered an interview with a 3.4 SMP GPA in 2011 (which I worked very hard to earn) but was rejected outright following my interview... to be honest though my interview went rather poorly, despite my preparation. A classmate of mine had a similar experience with a 3.9+ SMP GPA. Historically Georgetown has accepted about 30 SMP students to the medical school per year. My best guess is that they interview the top third of the class (about 50 students). Top third probably means some combination of SMP GPA, MCAT, undergraduate GPA and other compelling factors (e.g. URM). Basically there is no (published) formula and I doubt there is any contractual agreement between the SMP and the medical school. The obvious truth is that the better your SMP performance, the more likely you are to be interviewed and accepted but it is not the only criterion taken into consideration.

Currently in the program, I've heard anything from 3.3 GPA in the program could get you an interview. They tell us that the top half of the class gets interviews but I think it's a little less than than, probably around 70. There is a GPA cutoff that the med school determines so you have to meet that, but not everyone who is above that cutoff gets an interview, they look at your non-SMP stats too. Around 20 people matriculated to Georgetown last year, only 3 of them from the waitlist, which was abnormal. But you are definitely not given preferential treatment. Usually many people who get accepted came off the waitlist, some at the very last minute. This is partly because by the time the SMP grades are sent to the medical school, it's already late February.

It is very tough to get into Georgetown, especially when you have so many other people gunning for it. But even if you don't get into Georgetown, you will get in somewhere. 85% of students will go on to attend medical school. Most of us will get in next cycle if we don't get in somewhere this year. If you're attending this program expecting to get into Georgetown, don't get your hopes up. The program is one of the most rigorous SMPs out there if not the most difficult, so if you can do well, you have a good shot at getting in somewhere.

The goal of the SMP is to get its students into medical school, not necessarily GUSOM specifically (though I am sure for a lot of SMP students this serves as a powerful source of motivation). I am sure that the SMP administration does its best to lobby on behalf of its students but with multiple inroads to GUSOM (e.g. the GEMS, CAM and GeorgeSquared programs, not to mention a huge general application pool) there are definitely going to be some broken hearts along the way.

True, but I am seeing a growing trend of SMPs seeming to advocate for their SMP group to focus on applying to other schools rather than focusing on their own med school.

Kinda sucks since more SMPers hope to stay in the home institution but are being told to focus on other places.

when you say 70% of the class gets into medical school, does that mean US MD schools or including foreign schools as well?

I think the number they give us includes any MD schools, including any Caribbean ones, and DO schools
