Hi all,

I am graduating from a four year degree in Biomedical Biology this spring (so this is my last year), and I'm very interested in going to vet school. I was planning on applying this year, but I don't have any experience in a clinic or anything like that which is definitely something I've been trying to do, but haven't succeeded so far. So it might have to wait till next year. My main question is, what do I do after graduation? Should I leave the whole school scene and work and volunteer (in something vet clinic-related) until I get in to vet school or get fed up trying? I know this may sound weird, but not going to school scares me quite a bit. Because it's so difficult to get into vet school, it's quite realistic to worry that after a couple of years, I still might not have been accepted. I don't want to feel like I've been wasting my time trying when I could've been in school trying for something else. What do people usually do? Pursue another career and keep trying for a vet in the meantime?
Thanks for your opinions
Sandy

This has been said for many careers but I think it is true for vet med. "If you CAN do something else, then do it." Someone who makes a good vet student and professional is one who knows that there is nothing else in the world that they could do and be happy. If you want to be a vet and know that it will make you happier than anything else, then do whatever you can to do it. It's not a bad thing to be out of school for a while building up experience. Have you considered being a vet tech? Schooling for vet tech is easier, shorter and can maybe give you something to do while working on getting into vet school. The pay can be good too depending on where you work.

Well, first things first... you should look in to the different areas of veterinary medicine. If you can get experience in many different settings, that's a plus for your application as well as for yourself. It's hard to know what you want to do for the rest of your life. 🙂 Try the animal shelter, local stables and farms, and maybe even your local zoo. Take a job there if you want, or just volunteer.

Being out of school is a nice change. Your evenings are free to do whatever you want, and you'll have some money to either save or do something you've always wanted to do (for me, it was traveling).

It's not a bad idea to keep your options open if you're not definite on being a vet. Find a job that you're interested in... if it's something you like, and you are also interested in being a vet, I'm sure the skills you learn, despite what field you are in, will be useful in the long run.
