Is this true? or am i not understand the webapge.... is this true for other subspecialities of internal med as well? (i.e. pulmonary) u dont have to do the full 3 years of internal in order to go into pm&r, pulmonary,etc...

to do PM&R, you have to do either a combined 4 year program (with intern year built in) or one year transitional, prelim medicine then 3 years PM&R. That first year I heard can be ob/gyn, surgery/family med/peds - but those fields don't offer pelim spots for just one year.

When you apply, you apply for both your first year (PGY1) and PM&R (PGY2-3) at the same time. If you are switching from another field or if you don't match the first time around, you can do one year then look for PGY2 positions or start all over.

For medicine subspecialties (GI, Cardiology, Pulm/critical care, heme/onc), it's 3 yrs of medicine then fellowship. (usually another 3 yrs)

Anesthesia, Derm, Radiology, and Opthalmology also work like PM&R with one year of intern year (transitional or prelim) then 3 yrs in the specific fields.

I have a question. How does one find open PGY-2 spots and are there any for 2005 in this year's match? Do you have to go outside the match?
