Question is in the title. I was wondering if, after you get into a US IM residency from a foreign medical school, fellowships (such as cards) care where you graduated medical school from.

I have heard that it does play some role, but it's less important than where you went for residency.

If you read all the cardiology application threads, you will discover soon for yourself that IMG matters ALOT, and not just where you did your residency, unless it was a top tier type program that you did a residency at.

You could read SDN threads....or you could look at the cardiology fellowship match statistics and see that 32% of the Cards spots in the country went to IMGs or US-IMGs in 2009. So looks like the answer is "no, it does not really matter if you are an IMG".

Sdn is the best example f selection bias out there. Nrmp puts out stats every year for the match, google that to get a little more informative information

It's hard to tell how much it matters, simply because most of the foreign grads end up in less than stellar IM residencies. Therefore, there is confounding at work if you try to look at the statistics, because you won't know how much of the selection bias and uphill battle that the IMG's have is related to being a foreign grad versus being from a less rigorous or well known residency.
