Aggravated OCPD Resident!!!??? HELP!

Hi,

So I'm MS3, on my last 2 weeks of Psychiatry clerkship. The resident that is covering for our actual resident is very OCPD and does not like the fact that the attending lets us leave by 2PM since this is an inpatient unit and we round in the mornings. We've had the same laid-back team for 4 weeks now and she just jumped on this week. She seems very aggravated by the change of pace from her previous site and continuously asks us why the attending lets us leave so early, but only when the attending is not present. It's frustrating because she's being so passive-aggressive.

Today the scales tipped and she went full-out aggressive and told us we had to stay and finish writing her notes and not go to lecture. We have our shelf coming up and this was probably the most high-yield lecture (pharmacotherapy) thus far. When we protested, she got super upset. I mean, hey, I'm paying money for these lectures so I really just wanted her to step off. In addition, the computers in the rooms were occupied and/or broken further complicating the time issue. She relented but said that she'd never had "this problem" before, referring to the both of us medical students and then got really frustrated because it was only like 4 notes each and she knew that we could "do it faster" as though we were purposefully slow. Ironically enough, she's right, she's never had this problem before because we've always completed the notes up to today; we even volunteered to do a few extra yesterday because she had to leave early and we didn't have afternoon lecture.

Honestly, I really don't mind writing up the notes: it's really good practice for mock orals. Nor do I mind staying late. But I do like being present for lectures in which attendance is mandatory and the group of students is relatively small. But how do we, as medical students, alleviate "this problem" that we as MS3s have somehow become for her? Is it even possible? Tomorrow is supposedly her last day with this site, but I fear that she'll be back the next week too.

Help appreciated. 😕

She is being a douche. Sounds to me like she just wants you to be there to do her scut work for her. I have two med students rotating on my team now. I would never allow them to do more than two notes each. First, its not their primary responsibility to get the notes done. That job belongs to the intern, and to us upper-levels if there are too many notes for the intern to do. Second, while they can probably learn something about patient care by doing one or two notes, any learning value from doing notes sharply decreases if they're doing six or seven. While its great if med students help us out as much as they can, their main purpose for being on the wards is to learn. A student should do at least some things to help us, but scutwork should never get in the way of education. If my students have a lecture, I tell them, "Go to the lecture and learn something. We can handle things while you're gone."
 
Oh, and if I ever see my intern giving our med students 4 notes each, he will definitely hear about it from me. I don't think this will happen though. He's a pretty good intern.

At my institution this issue has been resolved with "you're a student first."
In other words, lectures trump over whatever else you are doing. Usually this is not a problem when the DME communicates this to attendings and they communicate it to their interns etc. Unfortunately, some students fear poor evaluations and don't say anything...Others just dread lectures and scutting turns into an obligate symbiotic relationship🙄
