Ok so I had finally decided to attend Univ. of Wisconsin and was happy with the decision now all of a sudden I get a call for Cornell saying they have a position for me if I want it!

I have to decide in 2 days because if I decline another deserving student will be offered the position. I wasn't even wait listed I had a no from Cornell however I guess that the only waitlisted a small # this year or something.

Cornell was originally my first choice of schools to go to but that was before I had looked this much at Wisconsin and I just don't know how to make my choice. Cost for Cornell is much higher, I think I will do well in PBL classes.

My mind is just reeling with the posibility. AHH What do I do?

Any help you all can provide to help calm and straighten my brain would be appreciated. THanks.

Wow - congrats! Thats so amazing that they can extend someone an offer after they decline you...but thats still so exciting!

I'm really bad at these decisions myself so I'm not sure how much help i will be but my suggestion is to sit down and make a pro/con list for each school. Take everything you can think of, academic and non-academic. And something that is most important star it.

Often it helps to look at the number of stars, things that are important to you (even like location), and even which are more concrete pros/cons! But more importantly if you are realizing as you write it out that you are trying to create pros for one school, or limit cons for the other - then you have your choice. Also you can always fall back on the put them on a piece of paper, have someone pull one out of a hat and see how you react!

Congrats again and good luck - thats a tough decision!

Me too! Except I accepted at OSU. Ugh, this is both good and bad news. Any advice from anyone would be helpful!

CONGRATS! That's great!!!

Random stuff to consider: which city do you like better? Which students did you like better? Faculty? What experiences can you get at one vs. the other? Where ever you graduate from you will be a VET! Remember that student loans aren't the same as high interest credit cards (though debt does suck). Just a few things to think about. How close is either to home (if that matters to you)? And the weather? Upstate NY is warmer than WI but gets more snow... that sort of stuff 😉

I know I've posted this elsewhere, but one of my best friends turned down Cornell OOS to go to OKSU. A lot of people think she's crazy (my self included, honestly) but I know she'll make a lot of her education here and she'll score some awesome residencies.

In the end, it was the money. Cost of living plus cost of attendance. Just figure out what's important to you - money, the town, area of interest, teaching style... and go with that. There are no wrong choices because you will get a great education anywhere.

With regard to the weather -- to be honest, they are the same. 100%. I've lived for an extended period of time in both places.

Cows, if you have specific questions, feel free to PM me.

So does the info you have learned about Wisconsin since you have "looked this much" change your first choice of schools?

If yes, go to WI
If no, go to Cornell

:luck:

I don't have much to add that people haven't already said... but...

how much is the cost differential, and how troublesome will it be for you and your family?

in my case, I would have probably gone to UW-Madison for reasons outside of my control, but I ADORED cornell and would have gone there in a heartbeat if I could have. That said, I was really excited about both options. They're really great. Cornell has an older, better-funded program... that appealed to me. They have lots of scholarship/fellowship/travel grant/summer experiences that I really liked (especially FAME, if I remember correctly?) but madison is great too. go with your gut, if at all possible!

Oh jeez...now I'm wondering if that might happen to me! I'm guessing your OOS...has this happened for any in-staters?

Hi cows,

I'm OOS for WI and Cornell . . . accepted at both, visited both, really loved both. Incredibly hard decision. NY and WI are both great dairy states, so excellent choice if you're into cows. Plenty of opportunity for dairy experience. Have you visited both schools?

The PBL activity we did at the Cornell info session was cool, but it is certainly not comprehensive in terms of addressing all of the aspects of a case/problem that you'd have to address in a real situation . . . so of course Cornell's approach to PBL is not quite as beneficial as a learning device as addressing real problems.

I do feel like I take the same kind of approach to handling problems that is used in Cornell's PBL activities when I am working in a study group with others or at the clinic, so it is good practice (especially if you don't have much clinical background). It is a fun activity, and I guarantee that we'll see several schools adopting a similar learning device over the next few years. However, I wasn't personally convinced the program (as it currently stands) was worth the additional cost of attending Cornell, especially considering how much I liked school and the faculty (and the cows) in Madison.

Luckily for you, they are both great. You win either way!🙂

Good luck with your choice. PM me if you'd like to talk more.

hi cows93,

that is a hard choice, but congratulations on getting in at Cornell! whatever you choose, it will be good!

Thanks to everyone for all their help. Well I don't know if decided is the right word , but I will be attending Cornell. When it came down to decision time there was just no way I could say no. Cornell has been my dream for sooo long. I did not realize exactly how much I loved Wisconsin until this happened. I hated calling Lynn and saying I've choosen to go elsewhere. I feel I have already made so many starts to what feel like important friendships at Wisconsin.

I wish everyone attending Wisconsin the best of luck, sorry I will not be joining you.

Well my grandfather is hospitalized right now also. If anything happens while I am at Cornell is is much easier to come home ( a 3 1/2 hr drive) compared to having to book a flight. Also they were able to make the cost of attending close to Wisconsins by offering me need based scholarships.

I love both areas. Again Thanks everyone. 😍

I'm going to sound like a broken record....

go where you will accumulate the least amount of debt.

Well, it sounds like they were going to be close in cost. Plus, being close to home is definitely worth cookie points, especially if someone you love is ill.

Hard decision, I'm sure. You'll be happy though. And so will a Wisconsin waitlister! 🙂

Ithaca = <3

I'd not be upset to live there for another four years myself 😀

I bet it feels good to have made a choice at last! Work hard and enjoy you're time in NY. Take good care of those cows.😀

Congratulations, Cows!

We'll miss you at Wisconsin, but I think you made a good choice!
