Would it be considered informal to wear something like airpods to a virtual interview? I'd rather have some headphones so I can hear the interviewer more clearly, but I'm stuck on how this would be perceived. Should I invest in a headset or some other type of headphones that are more discrete?

I think either one of those options would be better than not being able to hear the interviewer. They’re not expecting a professional level setup with a ring light and microphone...they understand with COVID these are unusual circumstances.

Personally I think a pair of wired earbuds would be more discreet than a huge over ear headset, but use what you’ve got and/or what you can afford.

Aside, but this is the year where if you have the money you invest in a good mic and XLR interface and a lighting kit. I'm certain it will make you standout.

Planning on using an external camera and mic. Just wondering about being able to hear the other person, not necessarily speaking to them.

Anyone wearing a high end gaming headset should be an auto-admit. It shows dedication to performance over superficiality.
Plus, wouldn't have to spend any extra cash since I've already got like three different sets stashed somewhere.

What are ballpark numbers for how much that entire setup would cost?

I didn’t even think about this...thankfully I work at a hospital and they are graciously letting me borrow an office for my interviews so I will have access to a professional setting and computers that are set up for tele meetings.

I can’t even do the ear buds as I have funny shaped ears and ear buds always fall out no matter what brand I try 🙁

Guess I gotta whip out the ASTROs for this one.

Noise cancelling headphones (like Bose) are too much?

Im not applying this year, but be careful with the expensive set ups guys. My experience from watching Instagram interviews/music battles is that the simple set up always works better. I wouldn’t go complicated unless you know how to work what you buy (maybe invest in an audio engineer too? Idk)

At my virtual interview they encouraged headphones for this exact reasons. I wore AirPods and it was fine

I'd wear Airpods and adjust the microphone to the AirPods, not the laptop's microphone to minimize noise! My neighbors were renovating last week and the noise was just horrible, worked perfectly for my "job's interview.

If you have airpods or other headphones with a mic, just use them. Have you watched the news over the past several months? Anyone interviewing remotely is using airpods or similar. It won't be weird. From my work meetings, those without headphones are much harder to hear -- it makes it easier for both ends.

I got some AirPods pro not long ago and learned the hard way through a two hour meeting that talking makes them pop out of my ears. :/

I hate using my airpod pros on video because it makes me look sooo pompous 😱 😱

I just usually keep it on speaker unless my sister walks into the house.

The original airpods sound like a tin can with a string attached so I'd definitely get something that sounds better. The pros are better but I could probably write an essay on how stupid they still look (also why does Apple insist on making their earbuds toilet seat white?).
