Hahaha. Boys with their toys sounds pretty awesome, but wouldn't be a good description.

"Feigned Skirmish"

How would y'all describe airsoft? I'm listing it as one of my hobbies in the EC section and I'm at a loss for words. Simulated combat? Roleplay with BB guns? Boys and their toys?

Thanks in advance.

I...um...wouldn't. But hey, that's just me.

I'd err on the side of not including "airsoft" as an EC.

I don't think thats an admirable hobby. At least the adcoms won't think so.

Well I have 7 serious ECs. I thought I'd title one EC as "hobbies" and list two or three things that I like to do in my free time.

Bad idea?

My gut tells me its a bad idea. This might translate to an adcom that you are trying to make up for something by filling up your ECs.

PS: Nothing against airsoft, I think paintball is a good time.

It seems too risky in my opinion too - you can always throw it in during an interview if you feel it's appropriate at the time, but airsoft doesn't have much relation to your pursuit of medicine and has the potential to turn off an application screener. There's little possible benefit, and more potential cost. (just in my opinion). Good luck!

should i include "drinking scotch while watching The Notebook" as a hobby? when im at school its a weekly occurance for me

Somehow I feel that many college kids could easily put down "binge drinking" as a hobby, but it wouldn't be seen favorably by ADCOMs.

What if you get someone who had a kid blinded by airsoft or is very pro gun control. Highlighting your love of simulated war games probably isn't the best thing for a field where you treat the sick and injured.

If one of the 14 most compelling things an applicant has to say is that he likes to play Pretend Soldier and fantasize all the fun of war with none of the consequences, the adcom's takeaway might be, "Is this person having the same fantasies about medicine?"

EDIT: Not a personal judgement; just trying to walk in the adcom's shoes....

Alright thanks for the opinions. All of the comments were very valid. And fear not! I am, in fact, a champion hot dog eater and I've included it under "academic honors" since it was a campus event.

Anyway, it was a spur of the moment thought that I wanted SDN's collective opinion on. I'll stick to the more traditional ECs in my app.
