Hey guys,

I am one of the first year residents at Temple University Hospital (associated with the Temple School of Podiatric Medicine) and is new to Student-Doctor forums. I have heard of this website and how some students use it as a tool to help them threw the externship process.

Luckily, one of our attendings is Andrew Meyr (former resident of INOVA) and he created the AJM PRISM manual which I know is used alot by Temple students for externships but not too sure if it used by other schools.

So he wanted me to put the PRISM manual for download on our new website tuhpod.weebly.com (under recommended reading). I hope this helps out some students. This is the latest version and every time he updates I will put the newer version up. By no means should this be your only reading but a good thing about his manual is that he cites the more classic articles for you guys to look up and read.

Hopes this helps!

There is also a section for Externship in which contains our externship manual. This is kind of the guidelines in what we expect from our students. I am not saying this is what every externship expects but I am sure it wouldn't hurt to know some of the things included in it.

I know the website says differently, but your program doesn't actually take residents from any school except Temple right?

According to their web page every single resident went to Temple, so I would venture they only take Temple kids.

We do take externs from all schools and this started about 3 years ago. It used to be only open to Temple students. We only had 2 or 3 students from other schools since they opened up this residency/externships to all schools.

I know we always say that if a student came from another school and they were good we would take them. We really do go by externships alone. There has never been a Temple Resident that wasnt from Temple but this is not because we think Temple Students are the best, its because we get 99% Temple externs.

You probably ONLY take Temple students as residents because the residency is funded by Temple University and there is a stipulation that to continue funding ALL residents are matched from the Temple school. That's how it was back in the day so I may be wrong.

Pre pod here:

What is the advantage of a 4 year residency program that a 3 year one does not have?

I don't think that, per CASPR rules, any program can say they only accept residents from a certain pod school. You can probably read between the lines and notice a "strong trend," though. 😉

I am only a first year but I am sure we would accept anyone from any schools as long as they were good. Like I said, I know next year we are full with externs but there is not one non-temple student.

Benefit of a 4 year program? Put it on a resume? To tell you the truth, I dont know. For me, it didnt bother me, I just went where I thought I could get great training. I know for some people putting in an extra year of residency is a turn off and it is definitely not for everyone.
