Just thought you would be interested to know that our Gov. granted an emergency ruling that pharmds can write prescriptions for refills for a 30 days supply including CIIs.

Here in Birmingham they are opening an emergency clinic at the fair grounds with cots and such and apparently the civic center too.

our faculty are taking shifts at the clinic.

Are students being used in the relief efforts? I know that if anything catastrophic happens in WA, the pharmacy students will be called in to oversee dispensing at regional clinics.

virginia has done it too....

In instances in which the prescription cannot be transferred from the original dispensing pharmacy or verified by the prescriber, a pharmacy may refill a prescription for a Schedule IV, V, or VI controlled substance for an individual displaced by Hurricane Katrina under the following circumstances:

1. When a person presents prescription information that can be verified from other reliable records, such as an appropriate shared database or a third party payer*, or

2. When a person presents a prescription vial with legible labeling, or other reliable documentation of a dispensed prescription that includes critical elements needed to refill

and provided that (a) the pharmacist can reasonably verify that the identity of the person requesting the prescription or can establish the relationship between the person requesting the prescription and the patient for whom the medication is prescribed, and (b) the pharmacist in his or her professional judgment considers the requested medication necessary for the health or welfare of the patient.

Anna, I thought you would already be halfway to Louisiana by now.

Northwest Medical Teams is sending two groups next week. I spoke with a nurse today while filling her maintenance meds. She is leaving Monday for six months and told me over a 100 health care workers have already left from the Seattle area through the Tacoma Red Cross. There is a crying need now and it will continue for as long as a year. I'm trying to get my ducks in a row for a tour myself.

This type of activity is where the community pharmacist really shines. We are logistical guys with an emphasis in quality control. We back up the nurses and doctors freeing up their time so they can do what they do. I call it stickball pharmacy. He doesn't know what his blood pressure pill is but he knows it is red. Back to basics folks. Diabetes, Hypertension, psychiatry. Food clothing shelter. Baby formula diapers, the whole ball of wax.

I wouldn't mind going, if I could afford it. (When I say can't afford it, I mean my paycheck today is covering the rent due by the 5th.)

I'm not good enough for the Red Cross, because I have my First Aid and CPR certification through work. Seriously, I bet they would turn me away as a volunteer. They want everyone who is a pre-trained disaster relief person to pay them to take their courses. I looked into it a couple of years ago and it was in the $400 ballpark. It seems unreasonable to me because the cost to put on the courses is WAY less. It's like they are forcing you to also make a large donation to be a volunteer. I figure if we have a large disaster here I'll just go to the nearest hospital, flash my wallet license, and say "put me to work". At the moment, I'd be walking 1 whole block to Capital Medical Center.

What's a schedule-6 controlled substance?

§ 54.1-3455. Schedule VI.

The following classes of drugs and devices shall be controlled by Schedule VI:

1. Any compound, mixture, or preparation containing any stimulant or depressant drug exempted from Schedules III, IV or V and designated by the Board as subject to this section.

2. Every drug, not included in Schedules I, II, III, IV or V, or device, which because of its toxicity or other potentiality for harmful effect, or the method of its use, or the collateral measures necessary to its use, is not generally recognized among experts qualified by scientific training and experience to evaluate its safety and efficacy as safe for use except by or under the supervision of a practitioner licensed to prescribe or administer such drug or device.

3. Any drug, not included in Schedules I, II, III, IV or V, required by federal law to bear on its label prior to dispensing, at a minimum, the symbol "Rx only," or which bears the legend "Caution: Federal Law Prohibits Dispensing Without Prescription" or "Caution: Federal Law Restricts This Drug To Use By Or On The Order Of A Veterinarian" or any device which bears the legend "Caution: Federal Law Restricts This Device To Sales By Or On The Order Of A __________________ ." (The blank should be completed with the word "Physician," "Dentist," "Veterinarian," or with the professional designation of any other practitioner licensed to use or order such device.)

ah-ha. Is this something unique to the State of Alabama, or was our law professor remiss in teaching us about this?

Schedule 6 = Rx Only. Every state has in their books but it may appear a little different. This is why a prescription number at many pharmacies (not all), start with a 6 as in RX60000001

I remember when I worked for Wally World in Mississippi 6 years ago that our Rx #s began with 6xxxxxx, CIII-V began with 4xxxxxxx and CII's with 2xxxxxx. Not sure if they still do that, though.

Schedule 6's aren't genrally referred to as "controlled substaces" though. My state reserves that language for the narcs.

I know Safeway does it that way (with the 6xxxxxx, 4xxxxxx, and 2xxxxxx).
