Just curious....
for those of you who have not seen the CSU c/o 2018 thread recently, @cadisestrama posted a link to an interesting article. Looks like a university in Alaska will be setting up a contract with CSU.

Anyone here have more info as a csu student, Alaska student or just general thoughts on the good and bad implications if any?

Implications: more vet grads, fewer jobs.
Implications for CSU: lower case load in hospital for individual students.

see that was what I thought too at first but then i guess it goes both ways, cause students would get to go to alaska to do rotations out there. It would be a cool experience to get "exotic" large animal experience and sports medicine experience, but yea I wonder if alaska would eventually plan on making their own teaching hospital as well? kinda like how WSU and USU have their set up? <----- although not 100% how it works over there maybe someone from WSU/USU could correct me?

I really doubt it would be reciprocal. I haven't seen any evidence of the ability for CSU students to go to Alaska to see cases/take classes.

bummer. well it says classes start enrolling in fall of 2015 for alaska peeps, so their first group of third years will be combining with the c/o 2019 peeps in the third year, so maybe thats why you haven't heard about anything yet?
I don't know.... i guess im just hoping on my part that there would be some kind of benefit to CSU students. If I get in this year and go there I'll be in my fourth year when the option is POSSIBLY available to CSU students. here's hoping I guess.:xf:🤔

Thanks DoctorToby for starting this thread. 🙂

Edit:
I realized my comments were not helpful at all. >_<

i suspect if they can get something up and running, it will be extremely limited. also, for what it's worth, SGU has been "in the process" of trying to set up a marine program so that students from our partner 4th years can come here for a bit. this has been in the works for years, and every year, no progress is made. i bet the CSU thing will turn out to be just like this (which may or may not be a bad thing - i can't imagine it will be cheap for students to travel to alaska for experience)

you know you and @NStarz are probably right... how disappointing.

any CSU students @Maschka1 @Fireflysushi care to weigh in from what they may have heard or what you think will be the pros or cons?

EDIT:

So i just found a better webpage of information on CSU actual site:
Looks like there will be only 10 students admitted per class from Alaska, they pay in state tuition while they are in ALaska for the first two years, and then OOS tuition for the second two years that they come over to CSU. Also it is CSU hope that these 10 people are filling spots of people who have dropped out of vet school by their third or fourth year for various reasons, keeping the class size at 138. As far as CSU students going to Alaska, thats the goal, but like others said, it may be a while, but this article doesn't really say much on that aspect.

Anyway, just thought I would share for those who care. 😉😎

I think this program is neat- it's an awesome opportunity for future/current students at CSU to study the unique wildlife and resident animals of Alaska. The 2+2 arrangement is similar to that of USU/WSU and UNL/ISU with one significant difference. Alaska residents must pay OOS tuition at CSU once they arrive in CO for their last two years of clinical training. That's a difficult financial burden to carry. I wish both UAF and CSU good fortune with this program, and look forward to its unveiling in application year 2014 (inaugural class 2015).
