Has anyone had success/difficulty matching in PM&R, Neurology, or Psychiatry at any of these institutions??? Some of the docs that I have spoken with seem impressed that I got accepted to Albany...am I missing something here? Does Albany have some sort of great reputation in certain parts of the country? Thanks for your input!

You should post this in the allopathic forum for a real answer. The docs around here all seem to have the attitude that "all you need is one acceptance." When I got into ALbany, they all said, "Albany's a great school."

I'm sorry you think albany is such a poor school. I have two friends starting there in the fall, most probably, and have only heard great things about the place. --Trek

I can't comment about Albany b/c I didn't apply there. But as a PA resident, many of the doctors I work with at Pitt were pretty impressed when I told them I was accepted to Temple. They also told me not to go to Hahnemann though. I think that is because most of them know its reputation and don't think too highly of Allegheny General Hospital in the Pittsburgh area. I think that is just arrogance though. If I had to choose b/w those three, I'd probably go to Temple.

Trek, It's not that I think Albany is a poor school, but I've always heard it described as one of the most popular "safety schools." Also, when I interviewed we were given some stats about current students and they accepted someone with a 3 in one section of the MCAT. I actually thought the people there were awesome, I am just worried about getting a good residency and I know that school reputation has a somewhat large impact on location/field of residency.

I met a girl at Temple who was accepted with a 24 MCAT, non URM, (4v,10p,10b). She filled in the verbal section incorrectly and realized it too late in the section. She didn't want to sit through the test again, so she just went ahead with it and explained it on her apps.

Dr. Kermit,

I got the same lecture about Hahnemann from 5 different PM&R docs and 2 Neurosurgeons at Pitt! They seem to have a more tainted view of the situation than the rest of the country does because it hit so close to home with Allegheny General. Of course, there is also a non-spoken competition betweeen Pitt and Allegheny General and I was thinking that too may play a part in their opinions. I'm still leaning toward Temple, but I recently got a new car and I am considering its parking safety at Temple. I've heard their is a plethora of vadalism in the area. Not to mention I'm still a bit jittery about my own safety. Oh well, I guess that's part of the trade off for the better reputation.

Dr. Kermit, It seems as though you are leaning toward Einstein over Temple recently, is that still the case? It would be nice to have a fellow Pittsburgher at Temple!

Hey FoxyDoc,

I don't know much about Albany, but I applied to both Temple and Hahnemann. I live in the Philly area, and all the schools here are great. My general impression, though, is that Temple has the better reputation, especially with their clinical program.

As for the parking and the neighborhood, it's really not as bad as everyone thinks that it is. The student parking lot is always full of nice cars (a lot of them), and there is a gaurd. The neighborhood around Temple is a little rougher than center city, but the campus is safe. It's just one of those places where you don't want to wander too far off of the beaten path so to speak.

i stayed in the albany area for few days after my interview. it seemed like a very nice up town area; so the area was very safe. i hope to buy a new car soon and i dont think i have to worry much about albany area.

what kind of car do u drive foxy?

Hi FoxyDoc-

I take it you got off the CCL from Temple. Congrats 🙂 I'm pretty certain I will go to Einstein in the Fall, but it depends on what happens financially. Temple isn't much less than Einstein overall, but I'm under scholarship consideration at Temple. My best friend is also at Temple and my boyfriend is in law school at Philly, so it's a pretty tough call!

As for parking, my friend is a MS-1 there and she parks in the student lot. It's monitored 24/7 and she hasn't had a problem with her car yet. (It's a pretty nice car too.)

I agree that Pitt and AGH have a little rivalry, but it's odd because you rarely hear doctors comment about West Penn in Pittsburgh and they are affiliated with Temple. I wasn't that impressed with MCP when I interviewed there. I thought the technology was great, but I wasn't thrilled about all of the travelling for third and fourth year. Also, their USMLE pass rate was terrible. The student body was really friendly, but many of them seemed as if they had "settled" on MCP or they had been reapplicants and were just happy to be in school.

Anyway, I'll let you know were I'll be in the fall as soon as I know.

Foxydoc please pm me regarding albany

Hey C U in MD School,

I'm driving a 2002 Nissan Altima. I just got it a few weeks ago and I absolutely love it. It has awesome horsepower and acceleration so it assures that Foxy is always the first one out from the light!

FoxyDoc: i just test drove that car. very nice, i cant believe how fast it is. if u go to albany maybe we can race our cars in the am, when we're waiting at the light to turn so we can get our a$$ to class.

Foxy for some reason I am on your ignore list, can you please unignore me, I have some questions on albany for you. thanks

guys

i applied to albany and i have been given the cold shoulder. i was interviewed there last year and ultimately rejected. i applied this year and was placed on hold BEFORE interview. in the past year i have started doing research, so i have improved my application. i dont know what is going on over there, but i feel slighted and a little bitter to be honest. but anyway, albany has recently laid off over 100 doctors and other workers to save money. its a good school and i would have like to go there LAST YEAR, but this year i have seen there true colors. i really dont have any interest anymore and anyway, im going to SUNY so my loans will be less than half of those for AMC students.

good luck in albany...its a fun town in the summer, but winters tend to get boring...i cant wait for spring

Foxy-

Where did you go to HS in Pittsburgh?

-Kermie

Am I the only one puzzled by somone who would use the security of a parking lot as a determining factor is selecting where to go to medical school?
And why the need to endlessly fret about the relative prestige of various medical schools, particularly when it concerns schools with similar reputations? "Is Temple more prestigious than Hahnemann?" "Will going to Albany hurt my chances of getting a competitive residency?" Blah, blah, blah. Grow up.

Psyche, Since you are new I will give you the benefit of the doubt and actually reply to your comment. If you had been reading ANY of my other posts it is quite clear that I am not determining where I attend med school by a parking lot! This is just one of my concerns about safety issues and Temple. If you have never been there (and I assume by your comments that you haven't) it's in a rough neighborhood to say the least. I am not a big fan of being mugged as I try to get into my car after studying until 11 at night, so this is why parking becomes an issue. Please engage in a bit of thought before posting next time!

Didn't mean to get you hot and bothered, Foxy. I guess your comment about the safety of your new car at Temple just rubbed me the wrong way, especially considering that thousands of med school applicants don't get accepted anywhere and don't have the luxury of worrying about such things. No hard feelings.
