I'm gonna suggest Einstein.. Can't speak to U of Cinn, but I interviewed at Einstein and the students seemed way happier than they did at other schools I interviewed at. Einstein also is on the less-expensive (still expensive tho) side as far as private schools go, and they have some great cheap on-campus housing. Students said they went into Manhattan every weekend.

Disclosure: Interviewed/Accepted Einstein and declined Cinci Interview offer. Opposite the above poster, I was completely turned off by the student body. I only clicked with a single person who was just waiting for the shuttle outside the building. Every other student during my day wasn't my cup of tea

Einstein is about 63k (tuition + fees) before living which is the same as Cinci. Living in Cinci will undoubtedly be cheaper than living in NY overall even with the subsidized living. Also the switch to resident rate, if true, makes Cinci notably cheaper.

This comes down to location vs. cost thing imo. Both schools are solid mid-tiers so I don't think your match prospects will be that different assuming both have solid research opportunities. Clinical training I'd say Einstein unless you're interested in PEDs, then definitely Cinci.

Living in NY will definitely be more entertaining as far as activities outside of medicine. Don't know much about Ohio or Cinci in general, but when I passed through for my interview at Case in Cleveland... it's no NY lol.

Ya, their small gym sucked hardcore but the Olympic sized pool was a random+. Just get a membership elsewhere. I'd personally lean Einstein for NY overall unless the financial aid is sweet at Cinci

Can't comment on Einstein, but other factors to consider for Cincy are that you can get IS even for first year if you're willing to live in northern KY/commute a bit more (15 min or so from my apartment searching), but that you'll almost definitely need a car even if you live right by campus cause there's not extensive public transport like NY.

Cost of living is also cheaper than NY even with subsidized housing (finding apartments w rent under 700/mo. without a roommate can get cheaper if you do split rent), so unless theres a lot of scholarship involved UC is likely gonna be cheaper.

Sounds like it might be worth going to second look for both schools if you can, to see how you feel and get a better idea from current students.

Living close to NY, I can tell you that there's not many cities that match up to it, but it can also be tiring to be around that kind of noise all the time and the novelty does wear off after a while. Bronx might be a bit less hectic than Manhattan, though, but it really comes down to what environment you like.

I don't think there's a significant difference in reputation between the two. Cincy grads seem to match all over, even if there are a lot who stay in the Midwest it could be more that people just have those ties there to begin with.

Both are great schools, and you'll likely do well regardless of which one you choose. Best of luck and hope to see you at cincys second look if you're going!

I interviewed at both this cycle so I can speak to my own impressions of them. A lot of my pros/cons are similar to yours. What surprised me is that even though I highly value living in a large and diverse city, Einstein's distance from Manhattan and the college-town feel of Cinci actually drew me to Cinci more. I just don't think I'd be one to make the trek to midtown for fun very often, while at Cinci there's stuff around the campus, undergrad sports, etc. Nice facilities are also something that's quite important to me, and I was just not as impressed with Einstein's campus and apartments. I'll also validate your interview day experience because I thought Cinci executed their interviews SO well, better than any other school I visited. Though the quality of interviews doesn't necessarily mean anything, I couldn't help but feel like Cinci would really value and support me with whatever I needed as a student. Current students seemed pretty happy and relaxed too. Their quartile rankings don't really bother me, but I am not a medical student yet so I could be vastly underestimating the effect of not being true P/F 🙂

FWIW, I’ve been working at an Ivy League research lab, and when I got in to Cinci (and plan to enroll barring T25 WL movement) every MD at my lab seemed pretty impressed, I think it has a solid reputation. The disappearance of step 1 scores hurts Cinci a bit for sure though.

I think this is pretty spot on with my feelings as well. Def don't know the effect of P/F yet, so def a question for current students there. It also Sounds like you've decided where you're attending. Thanks for the input!

I'm a current Einstein M2 and I literally know nothing about Cinci so I can't compare the schools but I'll give my 2 cents about true P/F. It's the best thing in the world. Zero internal rankings. So little stress. Literally the only time admin ever looks at your grades is for AOA. My class is the most collaborative, supportive class. No one is competing with one another for anything, so there's no reason not to help one another out as much as you can, cause we're all just trying to pass. We have a shared google drive and Facebook group where everyone shares their notes and resources. I can't imagine trying to survive medical school without such an environment. Maybe there's just something special about Einstein and the people they accept, or just my class in particular, but I really think true P/F is a big factor.

I'm also happy to answer any questions you have about Einstein in general.
