So... I went looking into this and think I did more harm than good. Based on what I read, this is usually associated w/vitamin deficiency (and demyelination), but can also be caused by a direct toxic effect of acetaldehyde on axons (w/axonal destruction).

For the purposes of step, is it safe to stick to alcoholic + peripheral neuropathy -> B12 def w/axonal demyelination?
 
Personally I would assume dry beriberi before b12 deficiency, but there would probably be some other clue either way.
 
Woops, y'all are completely right obviously, UW has busted my balls on thiamine too much to make that mistake
