Forum participants often bemoan the fact that D.O.s are rarely, if ever, portrayed in movies and T.V. So do I.

Did anyone see the SCI FI Channel premier movie, Alien Apocalypse, on Saturday night? A D.O. NASA astronaut is the hero of the movie. He rescues Earth from Alien Invaders while performing life saving surgery and OMM along the way. He is the only known surving health care provider remaining on earth after the invasion, and he loves it!

There are several D.O. related jokes woven throughout the movie and they begin in the first scene. I think most of you will appreciate the hero's explanation to the question, "Whats a D.O.?" I was laughing so hard I almost spit out the ice cream I was eating.

Okay, its a low budget B movie sci fi spoof filmed in Bulgaria, but I have never ever heard of a D.O. portrayed in any SCI FI movie before. That got my attention so I checked out the movie info on the web. My best explanation for all the D.O. jokes in the movie, is that the movie director is from Detroit. Otherwise I am clueless for why a D.O. would be in the movie.

Check out the movie while drinking some beer. Its worth the time for all us D.O. aficionados.

Well, I'm happy to see that I was not the only one to get sucked into another Bruce Campbell Sci-Fi thriller. It was one of his typical "must-see" movies (Army of Darkness and Bubba-Ho-Tep). I'm not sure that this is what the AOA has been fighting for, but I will have to remember his explanation of osteopathy (the study of slugs, or something like that...) for the next person that asks.

Sorry I'm very late to this party, but in answer to you're question, the reason Bruce Campbell plays a DO is this: As you may be aware he is best friends with Sam Raimi (writer/director of the spiderman trilogy) and stared in many of his early movies (evil dead, etc.) To this day, Bruce still has cameos in most of Raimi's movies (he is in all three spidermans in different roles).

Anyway, Sam Raimi's older brother and often co-writer (co-wrote spiderman) is Ivan Raimi. Ivan Raimi is an Osteopathic Physician. He attended Desmoines I believe in the late 70's/early 80's. The Raimis are friends with both Bruce Campbell and Alien Apocalypse director Josh Becker. Campbell's character was a D.O. and named Ivan as an salute to their friend the Osteopathic Physician.

From what I can find on the net, he attended MSU although the information is very hard to find; its not even listed on his biography.

Actually, MSU was proababy his undergrad. AOA lists him as having graduated from Des Moines in 1984, board-certified in Emergency Medicine.

Where did you find that? That will rock to have him as an alum of this school since, as we all know, Bruce Campbell is a GOD.

It's pretty badass, but to be fair, it's not actually Bruce Campbell that graduated from our wonderful school. Hell, it's not even Sam Raimi. It's Sam Raimi's brother, Ivan. I'm not sure what the proper analogy is, but it's somewhere in the realm of having Sylvester Stallone's brother, Frank, or Ron Howard's brother, Clint, as an alumnus.

Still, very cool. I will definitely be looking for this movie. DMU should hold a special screening.

Yeah but you forget Ivan wrote part of the story. So, using the Conan O' Brien analogy: Ivan Raimi MADE Bruce Campbell.

Touche. Maybe we can arrange for him to be the keynote speaker at graduation...so long as he brings Bruce Campbell with him.

damn this thread was brought back from a long time ago..

my brother was actually watching this movie a month ago and i so happened to be in the kitchen overhearing the dialogue when he was talking about D.O.'s. i remember doing a double take at the tv going "wtf, did i just hear that?!" gotta love mass media D.O. love. never did catch the name of the movie, but now i know. thanks!!

The part when Ivan says he couldnt get into an MD school because he had bad grades so he had to go to an osteopathic school wasnt really the greatest PR for DOs.

I have to say I think the movie blew lol.
