I thought I would start a thread to see if anyone else on SDN commutes to school via bike! I also think it would be useful info for pre-vet students to see what schools could be managed without owning a car. I love not owning a car for several reasons and the main one being how big of an expense they are. Transport can eat up a lot of your money spent on cost of living!

I guess I'll speak for myself and OSU to start. I bike to school everyday, and I know at least a dozen of my classmates who are daily bike commuters as well. Corvallis is super bikeable! You do have to be prepared to bike in the rain but there isn't much horrible winter weather. On the off chance there is, public transport is pretty good and also completely free.

Sooo, who all bikes?! What's your ride look like? (lol)

Aww, this is a cute thread! I have a friend at Davis and when I’ve visited it seems like there are bikes everywhere! So add Davis to the very bikeable list 🙂

I bike to my school on occasion depending on how crunched for time I feel on any given day. Do you have panniers on your bike?

I don't ride a bike to class, but I have at least one classmate that bikes every day and several that walk to class. There are lots of housing options really close to campus so it's super doable! The only problem is winter. When it gets super cold outside you have to either put the bike away or invest in some ski gear to cover your face. When it comes to snow, plows don't usually prioritize the small residential roads near campus but campus itself is plowed pretty well. That being said, there's always some kind of snow/ice compressed to the road for a few days, so you have to be more careful regardless. Bike parking usually gets overrun by snow when the sidewalk plows go through.

I ride this one when the weather cooperates.

This is my trail ride. I may use it for commuting when I move to Ames next year.

WSU is doable depending how close you live and where you live in decent weather. It does snow and ice here so less ideal but our bus system is great. Alot of my classmates bike. I don't though because I live on top of a massive hill. Biked it once and will only do again if absolutely necessary. However we have a lovely trail that's flat between Pullman and Moscow ID.

I can imagine Davis being bike-able. I remember when I went on an undergrad tour there they told us the #1 campus crime was BUI (biking under the influence lol).

I don't use panniers. I bike a fairly short distance to school (less than 2 miles). I have a North St. backpack (made in Portland!) that is completely waterproof. I know they also make convertible backpack panniers which would be cool for a longer commute.

Yeah when I went to undergrad in Indiana I just walked on really snowy/icy days or else it was dangerous. I also lived just under a mile from campus so it was a quick walk.

Oh gosh when I visited it didn't seem very bike friendly. It was freezing (actually well below) and pretty hilly.

Its not as bike friendly as some campuses but yeah when the weather is nice there are actually quite a few cyclists. Youd be surprised how many of my classmates purely walk to class. Also on football game days those are like the only way to get to campus without paying.
Can confirm though the hills suck. Going down them is pretty great though. Cuts the time in half....but uphill doubles it

Can confirm that Davis is extremely bike friendly. Actually they kinda shove it down everyone's throats 😉. The weather isn't that bad ever the worst is a bit of rain and mildly cold temperatures. They make parking here excessively expensive and reward you for biking by giving you free parking for about 22 days a year. That way you can drive if you get sick or it's raining. The downside being of course when it's too smokey to be allowed outside some people still have to bike for whatever reason and that's just scary 😕. But yeah this could be a lot more concise. I'd estimate about 50% of my class bikes every day, me included.

I have a 28 in magna thats went through hell with me and keeps on truckin. It has a basket attachment and fits in my yaris hatchback. UF campus is pretty much crazy unless you have a bike. I want to strip it down and paint it though and tune up the equipment. Its a cheap bike but it's lasted me a long time.

UF is bike friendly but dangerous as Vespa riders think they are bikes and will ride in the bike lane or sidewalk. Other than that if you get in and get on main campus order a loud bike horn.

This is ironic seeing as how I lost my driver's license several weeks ago and have been using my passport to buy alcohol... :bag:

Anyways! bumping this thread. where are all the bikers at?! lol
