all black suits for men ??

Hey guys,

My undergrad doesn't have a dental school, but I see med school applicants all the time wearing all black suits. I'd say 95+% do this and it looks like they are at a funeral. Is this considered standard interview attire for dental applicants also? I'm wondering if I can get away with wearing a blazer/sport coat over khakis, like this guy:

A good black suit costs hundreds but I can pick up a good blazer or suit top for less than $100 and I already have some khakis, but I don't want to stand out like a sore thumb if everybody else wears all black.

Don't mismatch colors at interviews. The norm is a black or grey suit. I will be wearing a light grey suit personally.

So are you suggesting that there are better/suitable alternatives for these possibly "less informed" pre-dent/health(s)?
 
Personally I prefer a navy suit over a black suit. Black just seems like what you'd wear at a funeral.

I wore a suit to my medical school interviews, like it or not, it's a requirement. That was the last time, outside of the above noted occasions.
Once you pass that hurdle, you get the benefit of the doubt. And finely tailored clothes will outshine a cheap suit every time. You would be surprised, or maybe not, how many cheap, ill fitting, off the rack suits you'll see on physicians at every level.
 
Charcoal grey suit would be perfect, pair that with a black pair of shoes, white dress shirt, a black tie with tie clip that "fits", and a final touch with a white pocket square. Please do not wear a blazer and khakis. Oh and remember to wear dress socks too. I saw a guy wearing white, low-top socks, it was a disaster. One last thing, make sure your suit fits you. That's the most important part to me.

To be honest, there are plenty of mom-and-pop tailor shops around local plazas or strip malls that provides suits/dresses/etc. and nearly-bespoke services for that of a suit-off-the-rack at Nordstrom/etc. Quite unfitting that many people never look first or mention about these wonderful places.🙁
 
I don't see the big deal with wearing a black suit. I put on the same slim fit jacket and pants I wore in my wedding.

In some cases, the interview is going to a funeral.

Agreed. The part to be careful about is the fit. If your black suits fits you the way it should, it really doesn't get much better than that. Do yourself a favor and get off the "funeral" perception of black suits. It's such a classy and timeless look... But either way, don't wear a blazer and khakis to an interview. Not professional. Any color suit is appropriate however for interviews. Navy blue suit with brown shoes is also an extremely polished look.

Any dark suit is a timeless men's look. If given the choice, charcoal and navy are way more versatile colors and should pretty much always be chosen over black. It'll always have a "funeral" perception because that is what people wear to funerals.

I walked into 2 different interviews with my friend doing the blazer and light-colored slacks move. There were a few "what's this guy doing" pre-dent stares. Kind of funny. He got into all 7 schools he interviewed at. But I still wouldn't suggest it. In his case, his interview skills must have counterbalanced the attire. Everyone wears a suit.
 
A suit says a lot about a person, as for me, I'm going to a Perry Ellis outlet store this Thursday. Its an hour away, but i need me a good suit just for my interview.
 
Meh, I thought I was going to get away with wearing a blazer but it seems like this is universally frowned upon. Looks like I'll go for the dark suit then. Thanks for the responses guys, I hope this thread has been helpful to others as well !

Just bought a Hugo Boss here. Navy, super 100 wool.

They have some pretty good stuff at their outlets. Found one off the rack for $296 (original 749.99) and got some alterations for $45.

Now, just have to accessorize. Matching ties and pocket squares, shoes and belts, tie clips and cuff links. Boy oh boy.

On that note though for those who have been to interviews, what was the most risky/weird/edgy/bad outfit you've seen. I'm expecting boring answers but maybe something interesting will come up.

There was a girl who wore a blue dress with a tan jacket over it that had some fringey stuff on it. It was actually a pretty cute outfit but it did stand out.

Everything HAS TO match with something else. 😱

But actually, now you've got me thinking about getting some french cuffs...

What about all black everything? Would that look too fashion and not interview enough? It would look good tho

Gold socks really killed me for some reason, everything else almost seems reasonable, well gold tie eugh

The only thing I could think of is maybe that's Mick Jagger performing Painted Black but he's wearing sunglasses, face at a weird angle, and I only remember his old man face so tell me if I'm totally off the mark.

Also he's still alive right? So I'm totally wrong apparently haha oh well

oh this song, well he looks good, I don't know if arm fringe would fly at dent interviews tho...
