Do they happen?

if you want them to.

It's all about how you want to manage your time. I'm halfway through my D1 second semester and i haven't pulled one yet, but I have classmates that have.

great question as I know I have pulled more than a few in undergrad ...

Yes. Pretty much all week. We had oral path last week, and so very few people had started studying for the exams we have this week. We had a provisional bridge project due in fixed yesterday and a #11 PFM prep and relined polycarbonate provisional practicals yesterday, endo lecture exam today, TMJ lecture exam tomorrow, and ortho lecture exam Friday. Needless to say, I just got home and I am about to start my all-nighter for TMJ, and repeat tomorrow for ortho... and I pretty much did that last night for endo. I got a little bit of sleep. Anyways, it does happen. Sometimes you choose to, sometimes you have no way around but to stay up late, and this is one of those weeks for me. I am really looking forward to Friday at 11 am.

Finals week I've pulled a few that were close to all nighters...but some of my classmates pull them routinely. Just not a good idea if you're seeing patients the next day or have a practical... :scared:

I never pulled all nighters in undergrad, and I seem to pull them frequently here. Actually I never actually do a full all-nighter, rather like 3 hours sleep.

Never pulled one in undergrad (without taking a couple hours to sleep like you mention), but have a few complete all nighters under my belt since starting d-school a semester and a half ago. Nothing like a nice 7 hour nap later that next day. Talk about throwing off a sleeping pattern! 😀

Schools with block exams tend to have more students who do all nighters.

That would probably explain my case.

I've never pulled an all nighter, BUT i did just drink so much coffee that i'm litterally ready to run a marathon dhajshdkasdkjhkajdhkjsahl!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

that's what i feel like. maybe tonight will be my first because honestly i dont think i could sleep if i sedated myself.

only if you and your kidneys aren't the best of friends. i'm pretty fond of mine so i try to stear clear of the caffene/sugar.

well, except for gummie bears...i'm addicted 🙂

finals and midterms can be atrocious in dental school....we would have a written exam right after a practical, everything used to be shoved in 1 week time. All nighters are a must when you dont study every day!. I think it's also school dependent some school will only allow 1 midterm/ week.

Oh... I do not miss those days. I burned that midnight earl plenty of times.

What tips do you have to avoid them?

Thanks for the responses guys. I'm a cramming kind of person, and I'm pretty scared of the idea of all nighters in dental school because of the 8-5 class schedule. Do you guys just skip class the next day, or do you coffee it up and power through?

sure if it's just a class you can skip it...the problem is we usually started the day with labs (operative, pros...) so abscense will put you behind and in trouble....you know this was only an issue may be half of the first year and all of the second yr of D school. third and fourth year mostly clinical and you have more control over your schedule since you can book or cancel your pt's. Don't worry too much about sleeping....you'll be just fine.

I don't care enough to pull all nighters. I am not killing myself to get straight A's

I am perfectly alright being B average and getting a full nights sleep everytime 😀

just study each night for 2 to 3 hours, focus on the next test coming, and don't burden yourself with trying to fit everything in at once. Also, use your weekends. It's really tempting to relax on the weekends and forget about school, but if you take time to go over the material you will be better off.

I find that for any test, if i can get through all of the material 2-3 times i'm pretty good to go. Sometimes, that does have to happen all in one day, and it's miserable, but if you can break it up into 2-3 days before hand then you'll remember more each day and feel better about it.

Oh, and my brain turns off around 10:30 pm and no matter how much i want to study after that time, it's pretty much pointless. I usualoly find myself staying up later (12:30-1) just doing things that are fun for me, and not studying. You gotta have balance somewhere.

And i totally didn't pull an all nighter the other night, i fell asleep like 3 hours after i wrote that entry, but some of my classmates definitely did. If it works for you, then do it, but if you don't want to, strategize!

In dental school, you have to be on top of everything. By studying ahead as the class progress, you can avoid most long nights. However, I did have many all nighter during finals of 1 st and 2nd years.

Never one that didn't involve a full night of drinking, at least not yet anyway.
Tests are usually scattered throughout the semester pretty evenly, though.

Midterms week starts tomorrow. I'll probably be able to add another to the tally by the week's end! 😀 (actually I guess it should be a 👎)

This semester our toughest two weeks were a week with 3 exams and a quiz followed by a week with 3 exams, a quiz and a practical. Of course finals will be more fun with 4 exams the last week of class and 5 exams and a practical during finals week. It sounds like a lot, because it is, but somehow we do it. For me those periods take multiple all nighters or nights with 1-2 hours of sleep but that is because I procrastinate. Many people keep up better and get enough sleep for several dental students.

And as predicted, I made it through last night without a wink of sleep. That makes 3 so far this year.

And how do you feel today? Take any naps or preparing for another all nighter?

Rats start dying after 5 days of no sleep...

do you guys usually wear your scrubs when you grab some snacks at some places away from your campus? What about wearing white coat instead?

This might sound a bit stupid, but...........🙄

Try taking 11 exams in two weeks with labwork due and then follow that up with the NBDE 1 like at Tufts. :scared:

how about 11 in four days...plus practicals and lab work in both fixed and operative...
NBDE 1 as well 🙂
oh yeah, and none of them are fluff classes either.
anyone else want to complain?
