I have searched some and I have seen a few posts regarding people who took all or most of their dental prereqs at a community college and were admitted to one or several dental schools with no problems. I am a full time engineer and cc's offer more night classes and lower cost. If you were accepted in a ds with all or most of your prereqs done at a cc, please chime in with what dental school(s) you were accepted to and what kind of DAT score you had. Thank you

Got an associates degree at a CC. That includes taking Bio I and II, Gen Chem II (during the summer, after taking Gen Chem I at a 4 year so I could take Ochem in the Fall). This also includes all of the obvious core courses, English, Math (through Calc I) History, Philosophy, etc.

I did this because I had to work full time and the CC was SO much cheaper than the 4 year.

It never came up in my interview and I was accepted on December 1st, albeit my 3rd application cycle, but I got in.

I will advise you to take some upper level bio's at a 4 year, just don't stop at the easy stuff...look at what the schools require, as you will have to take these anyway.

Most important thing...call the schools you want to apply to. They all have their own funny little rules. I was told by Tufts and Howard that they don't even accept CC courses.

Best of luck, don't give up and I have heard of many Engineers getting accepted...I think DS's like you guys!

Doc's bound to post his link sooner or later... 🙂

Anyways, I took all of my pre-reqs at my community college, including the year of general bio, ochem, gchem, physics, genetics, statistics, psychology, and anything else I'm forgetting. I then transferred to a 4 year university and took upper division classes. Although my GPA wasn't hot, I got great DAT scores and was accepted to multiple schools on my first cycle.

Since you've already got a degree a different set of rules can apply to you. Adcoms can understand that you're a non-traditional applicant, and they'll understand that you work, and might need to take classes at a CC.

Granted, a few schools don't take CC credit.. Tufts is the normal example - but even some of the schools that say they don't take CC credit, like Howard, are willing to bend their rules. Howard was the first school I was accepted to.

Good luck, and be sure to do your best in your sciences classes, and smash the DAT!

Howard was the first school I was accepted to.

I called them and they said no way! I didn't tell them anything else about my app...who knows. It's all good, I got in where I wanted to and I am happy!

I have B.S in Chemical Engineering and am currently getting M.S in Chemical Engineering. All my prerequisites except for Bio 1&2 were completed at a CC. I was accepted to d-schools and it is my first time applying.

Just make sure to know which schools do NOT accept cc credits whatsoever. You will be fine to apply schools other than those.

hey bud...

I graduated CC with 90 credits took all my pre-reqs there....transferred to UF continued to do well taking biochem, genetics, anatomy, microbiology and currently sit to graduate with honors. I think the key like most schools is they want to see you progressively better. If I was getting A's in CC and then transftered and was getting C's then this would be a problem. Fortunately a thing called the DAT 😉 is a standardized way in order to test everyone. Did not have the best DAT scores and I say that If I didn't get a 14 in math my AA would have been better. 18/19/17 (most schools like high sciences). I had a sick resume so I really feel this was my strong point at some schools because this is all we spoke about. I got three interviews 2 acceptances and set to go to Case in Feb. Feel free to view the pre-dents profile. Do what you got to do (cost wise etc.) if its meant to be then its meant to be....thats the way I look at it just progressively and consistently do better and you will be fine.

the best of luck

Hey. college credits are fine as long as your other application materials are good. I took bio, gen chem, o chem, and calculus at a community college. Got accepted to 4 schools my 1st application cycle (applied to 13 schools, had 8 interviews).
I was accepted at University of Minnesota, Case Western, SUNY Buffalo and U Penn. My DAT scores are AA/TS/PAT 22/24/27.

Rock the DAT and do well in 4-year school (+-0.2 GPA points difference between cc and 4-year school is ok).

although every school is different(u should call ur top choices schools to make sure), like I know UPENN doesnt honor cc credits, I and my sis have all our pre-req at CC & we had good dat s(23+) we both got accepted in multiple schools. dont worry about it u can save lots of $ in CC :luck:

yep... all my pre reqs were at CC and I got accepted to three schools. Apply wisely.
