My roommate and I need to settle an argument. All things being equal who would have the bigger disadvantage.

A caucasian
OR
A SE Asian (Indian)

What I am getting at is that I think SE Asians are ORMs right? So this would put them at a SLIGHT disadvantage.

They are ORMs, but I don't know if that puts them at a disadvantage; even so, definitely not in most states save NJ, CA, NY, or maybe even TX.

Asian median MCATs and GPAs are consistently higher than others; so it may mean that Asians have to do better.

I try to think of the URM system as providing advantages to URMs, not necessarily creating obstacles for all others. Having said that, admissions (like almost everything else in life) is a zero-sum game...

I think the asian is at the disadvantage. More competition. you can check the MCAT/GPA stats of applied vs. matriculated. There is a link on one of the minority posts.

Well, those are only 2 (two) of the 16 or so factors that come in to play when applying to medical schools. Those two are very important, but I am not sure if they can allow us make judgments about the entire admissions process. May be all ASIAN write a middle of the road PS or are bad at interviewing or do not know much about medicine, or have thick accents or ...you get my point.

are you kidding me? of course indians have more of a disadvantage. whites are like neutral.

im scr00d.

Eastern Asians are more disadvantaged base on their race.

LOL, that was pretty funny, you have a knack for this kind of stuff. Maybe you should do comedy, just be selective about your audience

tricky. us brownies are overrepped but its the white man's burden to help slumdog.

hehe, what is this - like the 15th thread on the topic since I've been regualarly visting SDN since like 3 months...

I think it would depend on the stats. (ie. lower stats: white would have slight advantage, and higher stats: both would be essentially equal, since the "asian quota" may not have been met yet.)

This of course is baseless hearsay 😀

I actually laughed out loud on this one.

I think we are all pretty much the same except for the URM's. Caucasian, Asian-American, and Indian-American ethnic groups seem to receive the appropriate level of health care, but the same is definitely not true for African-Americans, Hispanics, the inner city homeless, the rural poor, etc. I think those decisions focus more on equalizing health care rather than having Caucasian quotas or something.

I don't really get all the talk about Asians being discriminated against. Maybe it's different in medical school, but everywhere else (university, job, etc.) whites are the most disadvantaged.

Seriously, everyplace gets brownie points for hiring non-whites. Whites Asians might not get as much boost as blacks or hispanics, they still get more than whites. This group I'm with rejected a white candidate over a Chinese candidate for that very reason.

Maybe I am being oversensitive here, but this kind of seemed racist to me.
