Hi all,
This is kind of a rookie application question, but I need it clarified:
Are letters of recommendation part of the primary AMCAS or secondary applications (or somewhere inbetween)?

I always assumed that AMCAS had a system where you would have the writer upload their .doc files and digitally sign off on them, which you would then send to the schools of your choice. But I was poking around their website and it appears that only a select few schools have this kind of setup. So is it then true that most schools send you secondaries without receiving recommendations? Do med schools send you med school specific info about uploading recommendations once you have recieved their secondary? Or do they largely rely on snail mail/annoying your PIs and profs from years passed?

Cheers

you need to get your letter-writers to submit them directly (not in your possession) either to:

-your schools pre-med advising office
-virtual evals / interfolio
-to schools directly

these sources (except 3) should send your letters to AMCAS letter service much before you plan to submit because they take a really freakin long time to process. You should also send your letters to schools you plan to apply to along with your primary, unless they specifically say otherwise.

you should try to have your letters ready as early as possible.

Don't do this.

Many schools will discard/ignore them if you send them before they are requested. Then you will end up unsure of which schools you have sent them to have actually acknowledged them.

Each school does the LOR process a little bit differently, so you need to pay close attention to instructions on their secondary and website.

idk what system you used, but my school used virtual evals, and I sent my letters to every school I applied to the day I submitted my primary. I never had an instance where they did not have my letters later on.

Maybe its more of an issue if you sent your LORs via post. That way, I could understand schools actively ignoring your letters before they wanted them, and just tossing them aside, putting you in a not-so-good position.

For virtual evals, etc, I would assume schools just wouldn't try to access your letters until they have asked for them, but when they were ready, your letters would still be accessible to them.
