Allopathic Ob/Gyn Programs

I am a DO about to start my traditional rotating internship. I will be applying for Ob/Gyn residency. Does anyone know of any programs that in addition to being DO friendly have been known to take Traditionlal Rotating Interns. Any suggestions would be great!

What's a rotating internship? Is this a med school/student rotation, or a GME internship?

I think pretty much every allopathic OB-GYN residency takes DO's. May be mildly tougher, but its less competitive in general.

I have some friends that just did this. The best states are those that are traditionally "DO friendly." My friend just matched in Ohio at what I would consider a pretty good program. I know that she interviewed a lot in that region (Ohio, Michigan, etc.). I definitely noticed that some programs don't take osteopathic students so check out websites before spending the money to apply.

Why are you doing a TRI?

BTW Humble, TRI = a DO TY

Hopefully you're doing it at a program that has an ACGME OBGYN program, or else it may be tougher...

As a DO who just matched Allopathic OB-GYN, here are some of the programs that I know are DO-friendly. I only applied on the East Coast, so I can only help you there. I know that in general midwest programs, especially Ohio and Michigan, are pretty DO-friendly.

I don't think doing a TRI should reduce your chances, and might improve them. If you apply osteopathic OB it should also help.

I didn't match Ob this year so I am doing a Traditional Rotating Internship. For osteopaths this is a one year program in which you rotate through the major specialities again (i.e. family, IM, surgery, ob/gyn, etc). I think reapply for ob/gyn next year.

As far as the programs in Ohio/Michigan, besides the osteopathic ones which I am applying to, does anyone know the names of any DO friendly allopathic ones?

I applied Michigan/Ohio, and I don't think I ran across a single community allopathic obgyn programs that WAS NOT "DO friendly".

Not so sure with academic programs - perhaps check their websites to see what percentage, if any, of their residents are DOs?

If you're looking for some specific suggestions, I recall the Akron, OH programs (Summa, Akron General) having lots of DO residents.

I am an allopathic student that just matched, but based on my interviews at most large academic programs in the southeast and northeast, the only university program that seemed to be DO friendly was Vanderbilt. UVA interviewed a DO candidate the day I was there but I dont think they have matched any.

Ob Gyn is getting more and more competitive for all candidates so definitely apply all over, especially if hoping to match to allopathic programs, because I know some allopathic candidates who didnt get an ob gyn spot this year in the match.

Some of my classmates matched at some pretty good allopathic programs. Its more about how many more candidates there are gonna be for the available spots, and there are just simply a TON more MD students competing for the spots with a few DO students in the mix. I agree, apply all over. The quality of programs is really becoming pretty streamlined, and so applying only to allpathic programs really is for broadening the location choices of where you want to live.

Personally, I took step I USMLE, but not step II. I met many people on the interview trail who only took COMLEX and got great interviews and ended up matching to great programs.

If I was to do it again I probably would have taken both USMLE steps - a few of the more academic/competitive ob/gyn programs were confused by the fact that I didn't take both... and other than cheapness and feeling I did good enough on step I to make the "cutoffs", I didn't have a good reason... 🙂

Overall, ob/gyn is very "COMLEX receptive", but especially if you want to be competitive to academic programs, I'd recommend taking USMLE.

I was reading this thread and really appreciate all the input you have all given. I am a DO 4th year applying to allopathic OB/GYN programs. I took both USMLE Step 1 and 2 and am interested in doing a urogynecology fellowship afterwards....what allopathic programs on your research did you find to be DO friendly and with a high fellowship acceptance? Any input you have would be great...I am pretty open to going anywhere in the US to get the best experience!!!
