Ok so I've read many forums about optometry, yet they seem to be quite outdated! So I just wanted to know more about this particular career in the medical field. You don't have to answer all of them but your input would be extremely helpful. THANK YOU IN ADVANCE 😀

More About Me:
- I'm 17 (about to be a sophomore in college)
-My GPA is currently 3.6
- This fall I'm going to start volunteering at a hospital(appx. 75 hours) and in the spring i plan on shadowing my personal optometrist....

1) What else should I do (like volunteering wise)? What would look good on my college application?

Questions:

1)What is a good score for the OAT?

2)What are the top 5 optometry schools (in your opinion) and why?

3)WORST CASE SCENARIO: What if I couldn't pay for any of my schooling, how much debt would I be in and how long would it take to pay it off?

4)Do i HAVE to get a Bachelor's Degree? Can't I just commit to 1 more year of schooling after I get my Associates.... what are the benefits and drawbacks of that?

5)What is a good GPA?

6)Is the outlook of this career good?

7)In graduate school, how much time do you get off(like summer,Christmas,Thanksgiving)?

8)If I was called in for an interview, generally what are some questions that they would ask?

9)Realistically,how many hours a week will I be able to work (part-time) while in school?

10) When should I take the OAT and whens the best time to apply for graduate school?

Although KHE didn't have to say it in such a rude way, he is right. A Google search will answer all of your questions and then some. Not to mention, a google search could give then answers you want at a much quicker pace and be factual. Be proactive in the career you want to invest into and start looking at school websites and AOA to answer ALL of your questions 🙂

The thing is I've been looking on google and I've only seen forums that are very outdated. I just wanted CURRENT research information. But thank you very much, I'll search harder. Your input (honestly) was helpful!. Thank you, and have a great day 🙂

On the contrary, considering how many similar threads have appeared on this website, I think KHE has shown great restraint. There is also a search function right here on this very website.

All but one of these questions can be easily answered by looking on school websites (like greeneyedmonster mentioned). To find out about the outlook of Optometry you will have to read from many different sources. One of the most important things you can do is talk to as many Optometrists as you can find. Ask them what they don't like about the profession, and don't think that because they made it 30 years ago that you will be able to replicate what they have done. Look through this website, even outdated information can be useful, just remember where the information is coming from. There is a lot of negativity and disillusion in Optometry right now, and you would be doing yourself a great disservice by not finding out why.

Before you start asking about GPA, work experience, and time off during grad school, make sure this is the career you want. Make sure you understand how much it will cost you to finish Optometry school, and what kinds of jobs you are expecting to find afterward.
