Alternate list success is not looking too promising right now at two of the schools I am holding spots on right now but I received an interesting email earlier this week from a school asking about my availability if someone were to drop, withdrawal or not show up minutes before class began.

Curious to know if anyone has heard of this happening before?

I'm not sure how most medical schools operate their waitlists but I was waitlisted in March and they told me my place on the waitlist as well as how many are usually admitted from the waitlist each year. They also update the waitlist to show your current standing and as of today I have moved up to 5th from my original waitlist spot of 34th back in March (the waitlist has picked up speed during the last week or so), so I think it's certainly possible to be admitted late. I've spoken to someone who had classmates leave on the first day of orientation because they received acceptance at another medical school, so who knows what can happen.

Are you holding acceptances anywhere else? I only ask because I think there is a 2-week before orientation restriction in the AAMC trafficking rules. At least, that's what I heard. I didn't actually read all the rules.

One of the adcoms at a very good school (not bragging, I just found it interesting that someone on their waitlist didn't hold any other acceptances) said they notified someone on an opposite coast of the country and they packed up and moved there after someone no-showed orientation.

Mwoods, holding no acceptances, only alternate lists. So, really, I have nothing to lose.

This is pretty much how I feel about the admissions committee right now. Orientation for the school I'm waitlisted at starts three weeks from yesterday and it's several hours away, so I'd really rather not be one of those people awarded a spot a few days before classes start.

Yeah, that makes sense why they sent you that email in particular. At this point, most people holding acceptances have given serious consideration to where they're moving in the city their school is. I know a lot of schools have sent out emails indicating they don't expect more movement. But for someone not holding any acceptances, it is never too late. Any last minute deferment requests and issues may open up a spot for you. I hope it works out. I know that must be stressful.

.
We cannot take someone from a school that has started orientation (or a pre-matriculation program).
We can take a student with no acceptances at any point, even after we have started orientation.
