I have an IA. It isn't on my transcript, but that doesn't excuse the fact that I had a conduct violation. Been 3 years without any issue.

I want to state it and I would. But there are certain family issues that prevent me from stating it on my application. (I can't say. I'm sorry.) I was wondering if I could say no on the application, but instead email every single medical schools I'm applying to about my IA. I would send this at the same time I submitted my application.

There is one thread that I read that did what I want to do. (http://forums.studentdoctor.net/threads/tmdsas-amcas-institutional-action.1017495/)

I know there is a huge anti-cheater atmosphere on SDN. I just want to make it clear because I don't want to get flagged as someone who is trying to find a way out. I want to tell them my IA. Just with family issue I can't.

If anyone has a better idea (that isn't just stating it in the application. That's my last option.) I'm open ears.

Not reporting it on AMCAS is a violation of the AAMC rules. Either report it in the application or don't apply. If you can't go into specifics for some legal reason, then state as much, but you need to report it on the AMCAS.

BTW, it will be pretty much impossible to give you advice with the limited information that you have outlined here.

I'm trying to imagine how this would play out, so am working under the following set of assumptions --

I'm assuming that your parent(s) have claimed the right to review your AMCAS application before you hit the submit button, and have tied their financial support to this condition. I'm further assuming that your parent(s) would disown you (financially or even totally) for doing whatever it is you have been cited for doing. I'm also assuming (though I'm not sure why I'm assuming this -- just am) that whatever it was you did is deeply offensive to a certain slice of the population (sex, alcohol), but not necessarily to everyone (academic dishonesty).

If I were an AdCom member (disclaimer - I'm not) and received an application with a same-day addendum, I would probably conclude that you were deeply reluctant to document your transgression officially on your AMCAS ap but knew you should/should have -- cowardice? Same day after all. Explaining why you did it paints you as a child, not an adult. A few days later would indicate guilt got the better of you, but not before you did the wrong thing (lying on AMCAS). Lack of moral fiber? A few weeks later? Belated realization that you might get caught. Bottom line, it doesn't make you look good any way you slice it.

I simply can't condone leaving it off altogether. The risk of being discovered would linger for years, and the consequences of lying on your AMCAS ap could be fatal to your medical career, even years down the pike.

Sorry - but my take is that you just have to list it. If it means not applying until you're no longer financially dependent on your parents (my interpretation for why "you can't") then come up with some other reason for why you need a gap year and delay things until your UG is fully paid for.

Frankly, I think you also need to tell your parents the truth about the incident. I know that will be hard, but there will be great relief from the burden of the secret to help counter-balance the pain. Your family knows you and loves you. They may not forgive easily or quickly, but give them a chance to open their hearts and minds.

Thanks for the advice. I kind of guess I knew I would have to and my own innate response to attempt to cover it up with regards to my family. Thanks for breaking it down so well. Sure is going to be an interesting conversation.

Either check the box and explain it on your app, or don't apply to med school. There's no middle ground here.

i've not completed an Amcas application (so I'm not an expert) but why couldn't you complete it, get it ready to submit, show it to your parents. Then finish it and add the IA then hit "submit" after you add everything? Are they going to keep your password and look at it later? (that sucks if true)

I know that there is a way to print everything off prior to submittal so let them look at that and then change the password after.
