Alternates
Started by krodriguez
i think it would be an interesting situation when a person got into his/her 2nd choice school X and alternated at his/her 1st choice school Y. And other person got into his/her 2nd choice Y and alternated at the 1st choice school X. Can they just switch with each other? 😎

hey, i'm an alternate at tufts too, and here's fun info for you tufts alternates- we don't get any financial aid! only govt loans! they don't do grants or scholarships for alternates because they spend the money on those getting in first. the office said they can give you a rough estimate of the aid you would get for your last three years if you are admitted as an alternate. this from the mouth of tufts finaid today. yeah!
also, anyone know what the protocol is for if you're an alternate at one school and were accepted to another- do you say yes to the school you were accepted to just in case and then decline them if you are let in later to your first choice school? does the first choice school find out you said yes to another or do they assume you might have to do that?
Yes, you can accept at another school and send in your deposit. If you end up getting in off the alternate list you can then decline your spot at the first school, losing your deposit. I would wait until closer to April 15th, because who knows, maybe you'll be let off in off the alternate list sooner and won't lose your deposit money. Good luck!
Not sure if it will give you hope, but a friend of mine was waitlisted at NCSU in-state and she got in (this was 2 years ago). She was third on the list, and I think in April or May she heard from them that she was in... that means at least three in-state acceptances were turned down.
don't count your broken eggs until they're scrambled!.. (or something like that...)

Alternate at Oregon State. 3/8/07. Out-of-state
I was told a similar thing when I called Tufts. That's pretty bad news provided that only part of the tuition is covered by the maximum amount of federal aid you can borrow per year. For those of us whose parents can't support us, this should be fun. I guess we can't really worry about that yet.
