Alternation of generations

Im no guru on this topic, but alt of gen is where the life cycles include MULTICELLULAR haploid forms and MULTICELLULAR diploid forms. Notice the use of multicellular here. Most living creatures undergo haploid and diploidy, yet plants contain haploid offspring which grow and make eggs (female) and sperm (male). When fertilized, this 2n zygote grows into a sporophyte (2n) to repeat the process. hence the term alternation of generation, because once again, it will release sporangia (2n) which undergo meiosis to become 2 zoospores (both n) and once again undergo mitosis to become multicellular, release sperm and eggs, respectively, and on and on and on

Ecology gurus lets hear it. Im a little weak on this and am still a bit confused.

What are the alternations of generations?

Ask joonkimdds and he shall help 😀

gametophyte👎=>egg👎,sperm👎==>zygote(2n)=>sporophyte(2n)=>spore👎=>gametophyte👎

I mean in terms of evolution. Sorry I wasnt more clear.

Like when you have bare rock. And then mosses or something secrete their enzymes and turn the rock into soil than gymnospores come, ferns, etc...

what does that have to do with alt of gen. Kaplan had a tq on what order they populate a habitat. Is that what you are confused about? Cuz now im confused lol😀

the older plants had a gametophyte as the dominant generation eg bryophytes, all the newer ones eg gymnosperms have a sporophyte as the dominant generation- dominant in that they spend their life as that...i dont know if that answers anything

What you're referring to is succession. It goes something like... lichens -> mosses-> ferns-> shrubs-> trees-> shade-loving trees.
