Here's the ones our Kaplan guy said were important:
(I'll list drug--use--poss mech--adverse effects which is what he emphasized)
Echinacea--decreases cold symptoms--increases IL's and TNF--GI distress, dizziness, h/a
Ephedra--asthma, hypotension, cold symptoms, weight loss--contains ephedrine and pseudoephedrine--anorexia, insomnia, tachycardia, urinary retention, arrhythmias, HTN and psychosis
Garlic--hyperlipidemias, cancer (weak evidence)--Inhibits HMG-CoA reductase and ACE--allergies, hypoTN, antiplatelet actions...may interact with anticoag's
Milk thistle--increases liver function in viral hepatitis, antidote to amanita mushroom poisoning--Antioxidant and free radical scavenger--loose stools
Saw palmetto--treatment of BPH--5 alpha reductase inhibitor and androgen receptor antagonist--GI pain, decreased libido, h/a, HTN
St. John's wort--depressive disorder--may enhance brain 5HT functions--has major drug interactions: serotonin syndrome with SSRIs and also a p450 inducer.
Melatonin--serotonin derivative used for jetlag and sleep disorders--contraindicated in pregnancy, women trying to conceive (decreases LH) and nursing mothers (decreases prolactin)
that's all.
