Thoughts on alternative therapies that Psychiatry could use such as Reiki, energy work, magnets, NET (neuro emotional therapy)? Are any of these considered/taught in "mainstream" Psychiatry? I'm a first year.

I can't count the amount of times I've wanted to prescribe a placebo for a patient. The poopy-pants brigade made it illegal because they thought it was unethical to deceive the patient by prescribing an inert substance as medication.

I found that the vit B shot worked wonders for lots of ailments on the medical floors.

;)

We had a grand rounds this week on 'Spirituality in Psychotherapy.' The doctor, a psychiatrist, spoke on how he uses Buddhist meditation variations with his patients, and lots of other more spiritual stuff. He stated he was somehow qualified to do this - taught by tibetan monks or something and certified.

But no, it's not mainstream. We tend to stick to more scientifically-validated treatment modalities.

This, of course, takes nothing away from those modalities you mentioned.

Look how effective meditation is for the Jedi. No one can dispute that. For example, when Yoda was concerned after Jedi Master Obi-Wan discovered the missing planet Kamino with the clone army.....
nevermind.

I heard but have not read to follow up, that Viagra was only 1% more effective than placebo! 1%! But with thier large sample it was significant.

That's the point behind Viagra, right? A large, significant sample? Nevermind. :D

Hey, if you're a guy in that 1% who couldn't, but now you can...
now that's significant!!!!

(And why is this in an "alternative therapies in psychiatry thread"? I always thought that an obsession with penile function was central to psychiatry! )
