Hello all,

One of my parents is from a Central American country (not Mexico), however I was born and raised in the states (US citizen). Also I'm white. Posting this as I am not 100% certain what the aamc website defines as "URM in medicine."

Thanks

Individual schools that have identified a specific need for physicians representing a particular Central American Community may decide that that you are UIM.
If you identify with that community and especially if you speak Spanish and have a validated commitment to service, you may attract special attention from these schools.

It would help if you posted the country. Generally, Mexicans and Puerto Ricans always are, whereas most of the South American countries are not. The Spanish language skills are very important in the actual practice of medicine....possibly even moreso than the background.
