Am I competitive?

I am considering DO schools, as I like their approach to medicine.

My numbers are as follows:

Bio: 11 Phy:8 Verbal:5 Total=24 M
GPA: 3.6 (Science and total)

Lots of research experience, great extracurricular activities, great letters of recommendation.

If I apply, what are my chances of being accepted to a good DO school?

I beleive you are competative. The average range for MCAT scores 24-27 depending on the school. I would apply early and broadly. If you think you could take the MCAT again and score higher then do that. But for most DO schools you should be fine. Your VR score may be a drop of red flag. If you do plan on taking the MCAT again work on VR. If you have a DO school in your state you may have a better shot because schools lower their standards a drop for instate students. yes you are quite competitive. apply early and broadly. fix the verbal on the MCAT. a 5 is too low for some schools to consider you. the others are good to go. if you can up it by 2 points, youre fine. have a good personal statement, dont screw the pooch on the interview and you will be in. good luck.

you've definitely got a good shot at DO schools...but if you can do better on the MCAT, you might want to think about retaking it just to have more options.

my honest answer would have been no; but i guess i'm wrong.
yeah i would def. try to work on the verbal bc some schools may look highly highly down on that.
if you are not a native english speaker maybe or something like that then you have a much better chance of explaining yourself. i'd even try to mention that in my ps.

some schools may have a minimum score per section so look into that when applying. If you like a school and they have such a policy I would call the admissions office to discuss it.

I agree, a lot of times a 6 or 7 is the cut-off for any section. I would re-take with the 5 in Verbal.

would tend to agree with bigdog above. Your MCAT is a bit too unbalanced for my palate. Would be concerned given your BS is great, your PS is ok, but your VR is god-awful. GPA is good and if your ECs are as good as you say, I'd retake the MCAT, working really hard on your PS and VR sections (especially your VR) and see where you get.

Of course, I'm no ADCOM, so neither I, nor anyone here can give you a great answer.

You have a good chance, that verbal score might be questioned but overall you are a solid applicant. If you are considering retaking the MCAT's you should, however if you choose not to i suggest to work on you EC's. Good luck!

Only take the MCAT's again if you see yourself doing better on practice ones and are pretty confident that you could do better on the real thing. Otherwise it is not worth it.

agreed. However, realize your very unbalanced score will raise a few flags. You should have a very good reason you did not do better than a 5 on the VR.

I don't know what where you guys are coming from, but this applicant does not have as great of a shot as you guys seem to be telling him/her.

Yes, their GPA is fine. The PS and BS sections are good. However, his VR is aweful. Many schools will knock him out just for that. This applicant needs to retake the MCAT to raise his verbal reasoning or he runs the risk of wasting money.

It is not always the OVERALL score of the MCAT. Many times or most of the times, they look at the breakdown.

I agree with armydoc. Everything is fine, except that 5 VR. That 5 in verbal, combined with only an "M" in the writing section could create the impression that the applicant is either not good at english or unable to communicate as effectively as the school wishes them to be.

I would agree with everyone that you should be fine. Everything looks pretty good. The 5 on the verbal section is a bit of a concern but I dont think the risk of taking it over will compensate for applying early. If you apply now you should be matriculating in the fall of 08. Good luck!

I was involved in the admission process as a 2nd year at my school and got to interview applicants.


The verbal score would raise a red flag, but the overall score, EC's, and GPA would at least get you an interview where you will be asked about your scores. Be open and honest. Our school looked seriously at your academic accomplishments, but also you as a whole. They took people with MCAT's of 20 and turned away some with MCAT's of 30's depending on their overall app. and interview. Good luck!
