Am I crazy for still wanting to do this?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Crazy? No -- But there are, as you know, serious obstacles. (I'm assuming you've given serious consideration to Physical Therapy and Occupational Therapy careers? Also Podiatry?)

You don't say what your GPA is and what remaining pre-requisites you need to take before taking your MCAT. Those are some basics that will help the SDN hive-mine evaluate your chances.

And by the way, 24 is NOT old!

A) my life goals, which are 1) I want to be a mother and 2) I want to be a doctor.

B)I feel old. I am 24. Most of my friends from school are already in medical school and here I am trying to still even qualify for the pre-requisites and fix my GPA up.

C) Am I crazy for still wanting to do this?
A) My three kids would be evidence that it's possible to do both.

B) My colleague who entered med school in his 50s is an argument that your age isn't a disqualifier.

C) Join the club.

You aren’t crazy certainly but we can’t help you because you have given us no information on the realities of your situation. What are your current GPAs? What makes you think you want to be a doctor? Have you spent time shadowing docs to see if you are really interested in what they do? Have you had direct patient contact with the sick and dying? What makes you think you want to spend the next 30+ years dealing with the sick, injured and dying? Oh and 24 isn’t old at all so put that out of your mind. Is there a four year uni close to your home? You probably should try to take your prereqs at a four year school if possible. You have a long road ahead of you so take it day by day and do your best. Focus on your GPAs and then work on your ECs once you have established your study techniques. And then there is the MCAT but don’t worry about that yet. Good luck.

You need to asses how damaged your GPA is and how many credits it’s going to take to correct it.

How do you know you want to be a physician? Have you worked with them or shadowed one?

24 is notttt oldddd. A lot of students take a gap year (or two) to beef up their app. My UG school even recommends taking a gap year to ensure your MCAT is good, fix any GPA mishaps, and get some good experience out there. It's hard to determine exactly what you need to do because there's no info on UGPA, sGPA, or any EC's.

You're not crazy. But it is good to be realistic about what you want to do and need to do, and why you want to do it. I feel you when you've known you've wanted to be a doctor since before elementary school, but adcoms have to know /why/ you know that, and what you're going to do to make sure you stay in that. You mentioned changing your major 4 times, that's a little scary because med schools want someone dependable who knows for sure what they want and are going to be a good physician/person who can do a good job in the next 40 years.

Get a good plan going, and maybe talk to a university advisor to help you sort things out. Good luck!

Definitely not too old, I didn’t decide on medicine until I was 28 and went back to school for prerequisites. (Already had one child and birthed another while at school.)

But without GPA can’t give much advice. Also get some clinical experience such as shadowing to see if this is what you really want.
