Heres my deal- im applying to mostly midwestern state schools, but im not sure if my GPA is gonna be high enough. BCPM- 3.56 overall- 3.59. Ive got a 31P (10,10,11)- do you think this is gonna be a problem for me? My EC's are great, but the lowest GPA for matric. that im seeing is like a 3.6. Any thoughts? Thanks

I think you're going to be absolutely fine if you've got good ECs, LORs and essays. Those numbers aren't a hard line - they're just an average or median (don't remember which) for accepted students. That means that they DEFINITELY accept students with gpas below 3.6. If you want to stay in the midwest (assuming you're a MI resident here), you could probably just apply to most/all of the MI, IL, WI and OH schools and be fine. What's your list?

UofM (not a chance)
MSU CHM
IU
UIC
Northwestern (nope)
Wayne
MCW
UW
Loyola
Rosalind
SUNY Upstate
Albany MC
Penn State

Looks good. But what's IU? If it's Indiana or Iowa, they may not take enough OOS to be worth the shot. Look into that. While Rush does have a big IL preference, I would think you could add them to your list. You could also try SLU. And how about the Michigan State DO school? I'm not saying that you won't get into an MD school, but if you want to stay in MI, I've heard that the MI DO school is incredibly highly regarded. Of course, don't take my opinion - ask around. But it might be another school to add to your list (although you would have to get an LOR from a DO that you shadow, and have to do the osteopathic school separate application form).

I think you've got a great shot at Wayne and MSU, but if you want more schools (which I don't think you necesarily need), you could add Rochester, Temple, Drexel, Jefferson, NYMC, possibly another SUNY, UVM, and maybe some OH schools if you're not averse to the location (I'd suggest a few, but I'm not really up on OOS chances at all of the OH schools). Or how about Creighton? And if you're interested in NYC, perhaps you could try for Albert Einstein or MSSM.

I went to a wayne state open house this year, and their matriculant GPA last year was a 3.56 I believe, with a 29-30 MCAT. You're golden there as a resident, and have a good shot at MSU if everything else is in order. Don't bother with IU though.

Eliminate: IU, UIC, U of Michigan, UW, Feinberg, Upstate and PSU.

Add: NYMC, GW, Jefferson, Drexel, SLU, Tulane (if you don't mind NOLA). Good luck!

I'd get rid of UMich, Feinberg, U Wisconsin.
I'd Add SLU, Rush, U Minnesota - Twin Cities.
