Quick question, is there any way for AMCAS to check if I'm biologically latino?

I plan on applying this cycle as hispanic since I heavily identify with latin american culture and people, and grew up a predominantly hispanic area. However biologically I am Caucasian. Is there some sort of verification process I need to go through to prove my minority status, and if so what does it entail?

Thanks

AMCAS is an application service, not the government.
Schools on the other hand are smarter and better. There is a department dedicated to investigate applications, and they love to catch someone in the act and blacklist them, even if it takes years to accomplish.
However, you don't need to be Einstein in order to notice the discrepancies. If it looks weird to many you might just get rejected. But please, don't reapply as a member of another ethnicity, because then you will surely be flagged by Amcas... and that stays forever.

I'm not sure you should check it if you are not biologically. It will only help you in the admission process that you are culturally aware of latinos and understand them, specifically if you have service driven towards this community. You however are not latino.........

Who are you to say if I am or am not latino? I don't need to do community service to know my ethnicity, Ive lived it. I'm sure I could explain my heritage to interviewers, I just dont want to get written up by some application bean counter.

Both of my biological parents were born in Cuba and I have been raised in a latino community. Although I appreciate that you are so culturally aware you do not have "latino heritage"

Thats like me going to live in an african american community and now saying on my AMCAS I am AA because I am part of the community.
Being part of the community and having actual biological roots are different.

You will benefit from this by being able to talk about your involvement in the community, your upbringing and how this will benefit your future patients. You will not benefit by lying that you are Latino.

This is like saying I'm filthy rich, but I grew up in a poor area, worked with the poor, identify with the poor that surrounded me and therefore I am poor. Your train of logic just doesn't make any sense lol. I'm South Asian, grew up in a predominately white town but still consider myself South Asian and not Caucasian even though I was raised in that environment...

So wait, you're Caucasian, but believe you're Hispanic because both your parents were born in Cuba? So you are Hispanic? Or are they Caucasian too but just born there?

If you have to ask SDN if you're Hispanic, you're not Hispanic.

@ExpressoDrip42 - you beat me to it lol

OP never said their parents were born in Cuba though

These were two different posters.

Thanks for all the sarcastic comments I did not ask for peoples opinions on my ethnicity. I asked what the amcas process for evaluating it is, and so far no one has answered me. Can someone please just answer my question???

Because you're basically asking if you should lie in your application. Do you really need us to answer that?

To answer your question- no there is no direct way to affirm this. But the school will see you and immediately throw your app on a reject pile post interview. I know a girl who was "1/8th" Native American, posted this as her status on AMCAS, and promptly got chewed out at an interview and was told to leave. She did not get in anywhere that cycle or the subsequent cycle and believe me, stats were not an issue for her.

Latino is not a race it's an ethnicity and by living my entire life as someone from that community that completely gives me the right to consider myself part of it. The whole point of the race/ethnicity question to allow schools to select a diverse class? I clearly embody the culture and values of the latino community and would add this diversity to whatever medical school accepts me

Lol regardless they will be able to tell your bull****ting. These aren't like stupid gullible people. Why not say you're caucasian but in a secondary talk extensively about your cultural diversity from working with such a population? That I think holds much more weight than identifying as latino and going as the way you intend to.

The ONLY way I see this working is if you are a multigenerational expat. And likely it wouldn't even work the .

Really? Have you had to face discrimination because of your ethnicity? Have you ever had people assume that you're an illegal immigrant just because you're Latino?

I'm sorry but you're wrong. You can live within the community for as long as you want, and you can identify with aspects of it, but you just don't understand how this mindset is deeply offensive. I doubt you have ever been labeled or stereotyped or attacked for speaking your native tongue, bringing ethnic food to school, or having dark features. I bet you've never delt with being made to feel inferior for the color of your skin, or the accent that surrounds your speech. I have, and I'll just let you know that it doesn't feel good.

I hope you check Latino on your AMCAS. And I hope you get caught.

OP I'll give you an example.... My cousin's best friend, is as "Caucasian" as they come. But growing up in Miami, he was around Cuban culture and other latin americans all the time. He had a maid growing up who taught him Spanish. He speaks fluently and makes the best cuban coffee we have ever had in our life.

Although he was raised with hispanic influences, he would never consider himself latino. He has the self awareness to know that is disrespectful to people who are actually from that heritage.

If he was interviewing at Med school, I am sure he would talk about his upbringing in Miami, his Spanish fluency skills, and his bomb cuban coffee. This WOULD make him diverse and add to the class (without claiming to be latino).

Embracing someone else's culture is great... claiming it is not.

If you think writing in as a Latino is an advantage for you, go for it.
But if you turn it around, would that really give you that much a boost in your cycle?
What if you applied as caucasian, and talked about your experiences (or why you identify toward a certain thing). That would be way more impressive than the school expecting a biologically hispanic-looking person, and then a white dude/chick shows up...
How would you answer the question, "So why did you list you were hispanic/latino when you are white?"
Think about it, don't screw yourself over.

No.

You're not a minority, and you're certainly not URM.

If you don't have hispanic ancestry and don't have a hispanic sounding name, ADCOMs will all think you're just trying to game the system.

Lol sorry OP, with all due respect you've gotten plenty of solid advice on this thread about your question but it sounds like you've already made up your mind... do whatever you wish and good luck with how it turns out.

Transracial?

White privilege strikes again.

Even if it's a troll, there are lurkers who could certainly benefit from the advice given in this thread. Disingenuous box-checking is probably pretty common...

I actually support this business of counter-straussian racial identification. Change your name to something hispanic-sounding and say your parents are from argentina.

So sick of this bollox. Shut the **** up and study rather than blaming unwillingness to study for the MCAT on racial politics.
