True, I stress out as much as the next premed, but I wonder if getting sick everytime something big happens is normal. Last year, night before my comparative anatomy exam, I was hospitalized for Salmonella. The day after my MCAT, I was hospitalized for severe neck spasms. (I thought I was having a stroke.) Now that I look back, I have been sick for almost every stressful event of my life. Even if the stress is in my subconscious. Needless to say here I am, a senior waiting to take my last finals before med school, and my glands are swollen out the wazoo. Does any body go through the same thing? Do you think I will make it past first year, or will the boards do me in for good?

haha, you answered your own question...stress causes all these things. I can definitely identify with you, not so much that i'm stressed but i just totally don't take care of myself and totally abuse my health...yea tell me, i know, some doctor i'll make. but i'm too busy getting involved with everything else that i never sleep nor take care of myself. i won't even bother to mention all the things i've been hospitalized with (and it's always worse b/c i always refuse medical attention until it can't be refused any longer). but i'm almost done with first year and you'll make it too. Just try hard not to let things get to you and take care of yourself as soon as you see yourself failing; take breaks, sleep lots and try to enjoy life. lots of luck and God bless.

Take a multivitamin, vitamin C, zinc, echinacea, plenty of isotonic fluids, and extra sleep during times of stress to enhance your immune response.

I would also consider talking with your physician about possible anti-anxiety medications, such as barbiturates or benzodiazepines.

Do you get jaundiced every time you have an exam?

Stress hormones do in fact supress the immune system. I find that getting a good amount of sleep, taking a vitamin and only drinking a limited amount of coffee helps to prevent illness around exam time. Especially getting enough sleep.

How well do you take care of yourself? (Eating well/exercising/etc.) Maybe you are neglecting your health in general so when you get stressed you get sick.
