Just think of it as limited compensation for all the garbage you have gone, do go, and will go through as a black American, or the ungrateful racist patient or the dirty looks, or, as West Wing put it, halfhearted reparations for slavery. Or the fact that even when you're a physician some people will guess you're there to park their car
Do not take on this victim mentality to justify the URM privilege. You should think of it as people are much more willing to look beyond the norms to see you for your full potential and give you an opportunity to prove yourself. Feel lucky but do not feel entitled like this poster suggest. As a minority himself, Dr. Smexy promises that you'll do much better in life with this way of thinking.

I'm not URM

Good list...If you're thinking about NYU, think about Sinai too. Suggest also having the HBCs on the list. If you're a NYer, have all SUNYs.

Thanks. I'm from PA and I'll look into Sinai! I've never thought about HBCs before.

A 31 MCAT is pretty good as URM. Combine that with below poverty line, and you have a legitimate shot at some MD schools. You've proven that you can overcome multiple hardships, so schools would look favorably on that.

So not sure if anyone will read this, but I decided to take the extra year off and apply this cycle. I'm glad I did. But more importantly, I'm glad I came to this site for advice! I ended up getting into one of my top choices, have an interview at a top 10 school, and have many other interviews lined up! You guys helped me believe in myself when my confidence was nearly nonexistant. Thank you.
