Am I the only individual who cringes at the sound of the highspeed tool?

Pretty much title. Just a small discussion I wanted to open up with a few others. I have always wanted to ask this question to others. Whether I am the patient or observer (shadowing a dentist), I always cringe at the sound of the high speed (highspeed?) dental tool drilling into one's tooth. As a soon to be dental student, I was wondering if I'll get over this once the high speed is actually in my hand.

Probably. I was the same way with the way tooth dust smells, but now I kinda like it. Still can’t stand dry socket paste though. You aren’t the only one that doesn’t like that sound. It can actually be damaging to your ears. That’s why they make ear plugs specifically for dentists. I don’t know if it is supposed to block out the total sound (would assume not), but it probably helps because it is at least supposed to block damaging frequencies. Electric handpieces also are supposed to be quieter so if you still can’t stand it by the time you graduate, make sure you get electric handpieces and some of those ear plugs.

You'll get used to it. It never bothered me but I know it really really bothers some people. Staff and patients alike.

As far scaling teeth goes, its like nails on a chalk board but if you get up close and personal its quite satisfying to watch and you get used to it.

Yeah! I think nails in a chalkboard is the exact phrase to describe the feeling. I know what you mean. Hopefully once I get my hands dirty with these dental procedures/tools, I’ll eventually get used to it like you say (as in not be bothered anymore hopefully).

The only thing that’s ever made me raise an eyebrow is the smell of tooth dust/bone dust. I find the high speed drill sound comforting, like white noise.

Nothing like seeing a lot of bone dust fly into the air and you breathing it in as you're cutting up your cadaver with a powertool

I work in a dental office and I LOVE the sound of the high speed 😛 I’m sure everyone gets used to it in school lol

Nothing like the sound of dropping a tray full of sterilized instruments as soon as you get it out of the autoclave
