Hi everyone...I was hoping to hear from anyone out there that has or have the thought of switching from medical school to another professional school. I would really appreciate those that reply...thanks!!!

well, even tho I complain alot and am a real grouch sometimes, I am totally happy to be where I am. 😀

can you tell us why you want to switch? if you tell us more about what you're feeling and maybe why, then maybe more people can identify with your situation or be able to offer ideas.

I thought about switching to dental school for a little while, but that was just do to anxiety about the long haul that I have in front of me. It's tough to look ahead and realize how much time and effort that I'm going to have to put into this, but in the end, I realized that this is truely what I want to do with my life and I am certain that I will never be completely happy doing anything else. And that's what really matters right?...being happy 😀

I don't get it...Why do people think DENTAL SCHOOL is easier? I'm assuming that most people on this forum have the same misconception. Look, Dental School is probably the most traumatic experience in life anyone can go through. As if the didactic portion of the program isn't bad enough (****, you're in lecture from 8-5 every day), then the lab stuff, which you really have to be manually talented in, takes up so much time that by the time 8pm rolls around, you're ready to die. DOn't forget you still have to go home and review everything from earlier classes. So we're looking at staying up until 3 in the morning just to start the **** all over again in a couple of hours. And there's no guarantee you'll do well on the exams, b/c it's just so voluminous and the exam questions are completely ambigious. You're always on the verge of a break down, b/c the school will kick you out regardless of how hard you're working. It's tough needless to say, and I have considering many a times to switch over to our medical school (which will never happen, but I can only be so lucky). SO please don't think it's any easier, if anything, Dental School is much much harder then medical school. I

🙄 🙄

Give me a break. I can think of many things that are more traumatic than dental school. Like....I don't know....dealing with the death of a loved one, or fighting through cancer.

I'm sure dental school is rough, I'm not belittling it. But there are far worse things in life, and you might want to remember that. Good luck going through your torturous schooling. :luck:

Give me a break. The first two years are similar in terms of didactics. Med students also have practicum depending on the school they go to. The only thing that sounds different is that most med schools will work with people who are struggling to make sure they don't fail out.

I totally think about switching all the time. Perhaps it is because it doesnt come easy to me and I am struggling. I do have someone who I am not with bc of school who i would marry in a heart beat if I left.. (long story) And I worry about the long road all the time.

right now I am enjoying for the most part school (i am a 1st year) and I tell my self that I need to atleast go through this year.

thats just me.

I don't think they necessarily think the schooling is easier, but it is "easier" in that you do not have to go through years of residency after school in order to make very good money. Dentists have it better!!

I guess!

...to each his own as they say. Yeah, life is "easier" once you get out of dental school, but you still have to do 1-2 years of residency program b/c most states require it these days. And the crazy aspect of it all is that there is no guarantee that you'll be successful in private practice, and I really haven't heard of any hospitals that need dentists. I guess you really have to have your eye on business is what it really comes down to. But whatever! Just think twice before you think dentists have it easier, they have to work twice as hard to 1) build a practice---with 65% overhead and 2) to pay off all your schooling and practice debt. But I apologize if I was out of line with the above comments ---just kind of frustrated right now!

I really wish you would have at least read my post before responding. First of all, I never said that I thought med school was more difficult than dental school. I just said that I was anxious about the long haul that is ahead of me. You cannot disagree with the fact that it takes MUCH longer to complete a medical training (whether MD or DO) than it does for dental training. And we have class every day from 8 or 9 until noon and then labs every afternoon until around 5ish too (at least for this first semester...next isn't so bad). So don't try to tell me that you are putting more time in than I am.
And lets not forget that med students have to worry about residencies and all of the competition that goes into that. A majority of dental students don't further specialize after the initial 4 years while it is basically required for med students.
This pissing contest between med/dental students is really stupid...both are very difficult, and there is no reason to switch from either one to the other because of a perception that one is easier. 😎

you say that a dentist has to pay 65% overhead and pay off schooling, well i know a family dentist who operates a private practice with no overhead (except of course utilities) and makes about 200K a year. Dentists and physicians alike have to make our own way by the work we put in. So don't make it sound like dentists have to work so much harder. we all have to work to create our own practice and get loyal patients. Dentistry and medicine both have their work cut out for them.

Yes those dental calls are so brutal. How often were those again? Q-never? Not to mention all of the life threatening dental illnesses. Seriously, i'm sure dental school is challenging, but you're crying to the wrong people, we work far more than you in clinical years/residency. Go back to the dental forum.

Speaking of absurd. That's even worse than the addage "the hardest part about medical school is getting in"

Then again, that's a completely different take from "dentistry is what pre-meds end up doing if they can't get into med or law school"

Not another med schl, dental schl thread
Dental schl in itself is just as hard as med schl, my best friend is a 4th yr in dental schl at University of Michigan and they take same basic sciences as the med schl there, in additional to being expectal to have dexterity, do amalgums, prophies and stuff at blink of an eye, its more hands on.
@tom_jones, dont be quick to say that though, more is expected of them in clinical yrs in terms of their field becos they know many dont go on to specialize so they are expected to know it all upon graduation, we on the other hand are too, but we get residency which isnt optional, where we get majority of our clinical training.
My best friend is specializing, and even then he'll have to work harder than I will to set up his own practice but he'll probably have a better lifesyle than I will in the long run.

I think PeterGrifin meant that he considered that becos he can be done with this quicker yet still be able to be in the medical field, but going to dental schl..
That said, I worked way too hard to be where i am right now, and this my 1st semester has been rough to say the least but I'd not trade it for the world, I'm here to stay and my schl couldnt even kick me out if they tried...or at least i hope 🙁

Q: What do you call a med school dropout?

A: Dentist!!!!!!!

(kidding... kidding... just couldn't let this go unsaid)

😎 I think you nailed that down pretty well. My point was not to start another "med school is better...no dental school is better" thread. The differences that I see deal with the length of training, but after some introspection I have come to realize that a shorter duration wouldn't matter if I ended up doing something that doesn't make me happy. And I truely believe that I have found my calling in medicine...(although I have no idea what field I want to go in 😱 )
So please, please, please...no more med student/dental student violence 🙁

Whatever man! It's the same old ignorant comments coming from narrow minded individuals. My intention wasn't to prove anything to you, I just stated a few things that can be stressful about dentistry as with any career. I'm not knocking anything. Both fields are very demanding, but highly rewarding. And FYI, we do have BRUTAL dental calls (mostly emergency head and neck cases) during GP residency, which we are required to do by law. So i'll just take my ass back to my dental forum, where I can discuss what really matters...being able to afford a 7 series 2 years after graduation with the time and money to enjoy it....but I guess you wouldn't know anything about that.

For what its worth, I have nothing but respect for Dentists. Of course their are differences between MD/DO's and Dentists and their training, but it is silly and immature to debate whether one is easier or better or more noble than the other.

no one has answered the question that started all of this....
Can we get back to that please 🙄

Anytime this question gets brought up it is inevitable that some dental student(s) will come in here and it will turn into a pissing contest 🙄 But yes, I hope this thread can get back on topic,,, 👍

I'm currently doing a masters in Epidemiology and yes, there are a few former med students in my class. When i asked them why, the almost universal answer was that they realized as MS! that the medical culture was not for them. All pre meds think they know what a career in medicine entails, but very few, if any know.
Just by reading the posts in these forums we see how much sacrifice our career choice entails. So just because someone decides medicine is not for them does not maen anything. There are many, many medically related fields that may be more meaningful to them. If medicine is for you, good for you... but not everyone feels the same way.
