Your race is still "caucasian", so no you are not underrepresented. Also, I believe your ethnicity/race must make up a certain percentage of the national population to apply as a URM. And considering I haven't seen a Azeri parade in NYC during the summer months...I'm gonna assume there isn't a major population in the US (5,553 of you to be exact). And with the US population rolling in a little over 300 million...your ethnicity makes up a total of 0.0018% of the country. Theoretically then since there are 940,000 practicing physicians, residents, interns, and retired physicians in the US. That means that .306% of people in the US are a physician. With your population of 5553*.306% = approximately 14 physicians from your population. I guess if you had under this, you could argue being a URM...but considering the AAMC most likely considers you white/caucasian...I'd put that. All the former soviet union countries are considered to be white/caucasian. Sorry bro

Not to mention...the school decides whether or not you are URM. So unless a school views you as so you're out of luck. I definitely think you should talk about your ethnicity in your personal statement though if it applies to why you want to be a doctor. Cheers

Go to the AAMC website and look at their definition of "underrepresented in healthcare". While your ethnicity may be a minority in the US, in terms of being a racial URM, you are not. If you want to apply under the designation of "disadvantaged" then look at the criteria for this designation and see if you fit.

No designation/category is going to make up for a less than competitive AMCAS application. Fix what you can fix and do your best rather that trying to figure out if you can "fit" under some designation that you believe will enhance your qualifications. You can be white as snow and up your "qualifications" for medical school by doing some "damage-control" and submitting a competitive application.


Good uGPAs and a strong MCAT are the best "designation" in terms of application to medical school.

Hispanic which are 1/7 population of US are considered minority.

But Azeris with population 5553+1(I am new one) are not considered unrepresented.

It has nothing to do with the #s in the general population it is underrepresented in Medicine/dentistry/whatever. So if the US pop is 15% hispanic and only 7% of doctors (I made up this number) are hispanic they are underrepresented because from the general population data it would follow that 15% of doctors should be hispanic.

And as ChemEng pointed out you fall under the broad category of caucasian which is not considered URM.
