Regarding my chances of getting accepted somewhere? Do I have a shot to redeem myself?

I just graduated with my bachelor's in Marketing with a 3.04 GPA. I didn't have my heart in the field hence the lower grades. I decided to shoot for dental school just recently and hope I can spring up my chances with a solid sGPA.

Here's what I've finished so far according to the prereqs for UMich Dental School... Sociology (A), Med Terminology (A), Bio1 (C), Bio2 (A). As you can see I still need Physics, Orgo, Gen Chem, etc...

I'm promising myself not to get another C, but am I already in too deep? Any tips you guys might give if you were in my position? I'm going to start shadowing a dentist and volunteering next week.

Thanks for any help guys.

hey, not to worry, tons of people switch careers/majors. ur gpa isn't great but that's what the personal essay is for, explaining why the career change and back that up with ur phenomenal grades in the scienes (to prove urp assions for the human body). u should be ok but make sure u have a really really good gpa before u even think about applying. and retain and develop (retain is key!!) ur basic sciences so u rock the DAT. good luck!

Hey thanks Panda,

Can you recommend a good course outline for next semester?

I want to make sure I get A's across the board so I don't want to overload myself. I'm signing up for Physics 1 and Chemistry 1 I'm sure thats fine right? Or should I start with something different like Orgo?

never lose faith if this is what you wanna do... you will get there! you'll just have to work at it... making it that much better! good luck.
My GPA is also closer to a 3 rather than 4 or even 3.5.... but i am hoping. nail ur DATs too

hey it's hard to say cuz i'm assuming to don't need "non-science" upper divisions rite? cuz u completed them for ur marketing major..

cuz how i did it as a science major was "two sciences Ochem1, Phys 1, and 2 nonscieneces" to kinda pace myself..don't overload urself cuz sciences can be overwheliming, esp cuz its new to you. u want A's rite??

the best person to ask..the science counselor. they will really shine some light and set up ur schedule for you. and u decide from there. go in with LOTS of questions. good luck!

YOu can definitely do it. Promise yourself not to get a B anymore. That's how determined you should be.
Also, why would you take socio, medical terminology(?), bio 1 and bio 2 without even taking a single Gchem class.
Here is my humble advise: take Gchem, and physics ASAP, and make sure you take them in an accredited community college or university that offers lab for both of them as well. The schools definitely want to see the labs with those courses.
Also, have a look at DAT's quantitive reasoning section, and start practicing from now on [if you are not that good at math]. Taking a precalc class can also help big time.
You can definitely do it. Good luck
