Hey all. I'm one year out of dental school and would love to answer any questions you may have. I went to MOSDOH and have been working in a public health setting for the last year.

If you have any questions about dental school, MOSDOH, applying for jobs, public health, or anything else, let me know.

1. How did you go about finding a job in public health, did you visit potential sites you were interested in during D4 year? I've read that some sites are nice while others aren't.

2. How are the variety of procedures you perform, just drilling and filling?

3. Did you negotiate salary or vacation days? What's your work schedule like?

I sent my resume to the IHS and NHSC recruiters along with a general statement which included locations I'd like to work. They then forwarded it on and recruiters contacted me. Also at MOSDOH, we did 4 rotations in our D4 where we had to work in FQHCs for 4-6 weeks at each. I along with most of my classmates received job offers from at least one of the places we rotated through. I would say you 100% need to do at the least an on-site interview wherever you are consider because like you said every FQHC is different. From my experience, the IHS clinics are newer and usually have a little better equipment due to better federal funding. Also, check out the medicaid reimbursement rates in whatever states you are considering. States like Wisconsin or Washington have strong Medicaid programs which pay for more which means those FQHCs are going to have more patients who can receive more care because more is covered.

On any given week I've got about 15 denture visits, usually at least one delivery a week with the rest being the other various steps in the process. Obviously I also am doing a good number of fillings (more composite than amalgam) and extractions every day. I do 3-5 crowns a month and about the same for endo. Lots of pedo and a fair amount of special needs.

again this is all going to depend on what medicaid covers in whatever state you want to work in.

I did negotiate salary. I have a masters in public health and had about 15 job offers. So I had a lot of leveraging power. I used this to bump most offers up by at least $5k-10k.
at my current employment, I have 20 vacation days, 10 CE days, 8 (I think) federal holidays and work M-F 8-5.

now take that and my salary with a grain of salt because these were much higher than my other offers. Most of my other offers were between $140k-175k with 15-20 days off. Which is still pretty good though

Campus culture is super chill. Small class size means you really get to know your classmates. First two years, majority of the class hung out almost every weekend. No competition, we had a couple gunners in the class but they didn't do it at the expense of everyone else.

Also the faculty really feel more like family. They're all so friendly. They're focus is the students and they'll do whatever they need to so that the students can succeed.

2 years out, I still interact regularly with my classmates and faculty through facebook, texting, etc.
