lol

Although it'll be interesting to see what happens. A lot of people may decide to procrastinate even longer, much like in college with deadline extensions on term papers.

It will be interesting to see if they will also delay the time at which schools receive the verified applications. Looking at past verification times, it was likely that June 10th was going to be the last day to submit to beat the deadline. Assuming more applications this year, it is likely that June 10th applications would not have made the deadline by just a fraction.

Basically, this means that even some people submitting the first day this year could potentially miss the first wave of released applications. If you are unable to submit that day, being gone or having computer trouble for example, you could be delayed quite easily. That seems a bit unfair.

Oh, that's nice. I suddenly have way more time to finish this thing! And all you guys who were good and got stuff done early - we're all in the same boat now! Thanks AMCAS!

Agreed totally defeated the purpose of working to finish by June 4. I feel like this problem has gone on for a week, it should've been fixed earlier. 👎

Such is life. I wonder if they'll have server issues from what will likely be an increased submission rate on Monday as well. I can only imagine the panic in premeds if that were to occur.

To elaborate, from their Facebook post it looks like AMCAS will not be adjusting the transferring of application data to schools to compensate for the submission delay. See the reminder:

I'm wondering how many people will be hitting submit at 9 AM this year on June 10. The server might crash from the overload.

Maybe this is an aggressive gunning attempt by a super hacker premed to get us to put off finishing up the application work tonight 😀

Updating the AMCAS, Facebook, and Twitter pages all at once?

That's what AMCAS gets for making their password "password" 😆

I bet it was that guy who made the thread asking about his chances after his school expelled him for hacking the faculty and student accounts to get powerpoint slides.

So is there a chance that even if we apply at 9:31 a.m. on June 10 that we won't make the cut for the first batch to be verified? Will there be that much of a flood of applicants? What if the server crashes. 🙁

This sucks.

How long of a delay would there be if people did upload later on the 10th or 11th?

I doubt there are enough people applying this year to actually crash a server.

It is unlikely that the amount of people actually submitting would crash the server. They have never had an issue in the past that I am aware of.

If you apply early on in the day I doubt you will miss the first batch, but it really depends on how many are actually submitted and how fast AMCAS is at verification. No one can truly answer that question for you. Going by last year, in order to be verified by June 28th [this year] you would have had to submitted by the 9th of June, which is going to be earlier than the first submission this year.

If I were to guess (and don't quote me on this in a month saying I was wrong), first day submissions should still beat the first transfer dates. The next day and beyond is anyone's guess.

How long of a delay would there be if people did upload later on the 10th or 11th?

First day will probably still beat the first transfer date, but it is anyone's guess as to how this will change the process.

To be fair to those panicking, not being in first day will not change your application in any significant way. It's nice, but it's really not necessary. Submitting that week should still leave you in the 'early' bunch.

This gives me more time to finish my app, so I'm lucky.

Would anyone be willing to tell me if I'm not able to finish my app June 10th, whens the latest I can submit it without any ill effects. I'm taking my MCAT on July 26th anyway.

Your application will not be looked at until your MCAT score is back. I don't know what date your MCAT score will be back, but if you find that date (MCAT website) and then compare the dates to the thread found here: http://forums.studentdoctor.net/showthread.php?t=920463&page=18

The submission date that gives you the verification date for your MCAT score will be the latest submission that would give no ill-effects to your application.

Note: This assumes the projected timeline stays the same (which it won't, it has gone slower and slower every year due to increased submissions) and that you submit your secondaries immediately.

Actually they almost always have had server and other issues on first day since they implemented computerized applications in 2000. That first year was so bad that many schools reverted to paper applications

Thanks for correcting me, I didn't know about this!

2) As most students should know, many colleges/universities seem to slow down in summer. Many members of the faculty are off for summer functions, etc. Adcoms may not meet until September and usually review things in about monthly cycles. So, that first meeting may have everything that has been transmitted from opening day thru July 31.

My advice, wait a few days in will not make any difference to your application being transmitted.

While I won't contest your first point, at least a minority of schools don't follow this at all. Schools like Chicago, Pitt, and Mayo seem to have aggressive cycles that punish any delay in your application, intentionally or not. I'm sure there are plenty of other schools that follow suit.

It annoys me that I find this delay so annoying.

maybe I can save myself some money by getting an acceptance this week and not having to resubmit. please? 🙂

Seeing as the verification time concern is even more glaring due to this delay, I was wondering if anyone knows if they will put off verifying your AMCAS if your MCAT score will not be shown until June 18th? I was originally not concerned because I already have my first MCAT score on the application with me noting that I took it a second time at May 18th, but now I am concerned at how they would treat the application, knowing that the score won't show up until later??? :O

It appears nothing will change. AMCAS has not stated any changes other than the initial submission date. I don't believe AMCAS has changed verification procedure in quite some time, though I may stand corrected on this as well. 😛

I will agree you on that. Certainly many, if not most, schools will automatically send the secondaries as soon as you app is transmitted so that is certainly reason to submit early. But I still suggest a week delay.

In a completely shameless plug, UChicago, Pitt and Mayo have all taken OldPreMed applicants

Woo-hoo! 🙂

Same here. Are you choosing all your schools before submitting your app? Or choosing just one school first, and then adding more after verification when scores are released?

I'm just going to choose all of them. What's the benefit of just picking one?

Also, just to make sure. They won't even look at my primary before by MCAT score is up right. But I will get sent a secondary (except for a very select few).

So realistically speaking, will I be at a disadvantage if I submit my app in the evening on June 10th? I can't imagine there being so many people submitting that day that only a fraction of those would make the first batch...

Someone correct me if i'm wrong.... but I think some people only submit one in the event that they do not do well on the MCAT. People usually pick some school that is way out of reach for them regardless of what they get on the test because even if they end up having to reapply, they won't be applying there again anyway. Also, if you do really poorly and decide to wait until next cycle, you would only be considered a reapplicant at that one crazy reach school.

While you are correct that this could be one good reason to only submit to one school initially if you have not received your MCAT score, the main reason most people do so is to just get their application in so that it can start to get verified (you can not submit without at least entering one school). And then when they see their MCAT score they can add schools that are more appropriate for their stats range (this is especially a good idea for those scoring inconsistently/all over the place on practice exams).

That being said, if you are going to just pick one school to submit to initially just to get your app in line to be verified, I would probably pick a safety school, not a reach school. For example, if you think you probably got somewhere between a 28 and 33 on your MCAT, pick a school that you would apply to if you got a 33 but that you would also still apply to if you only got a 28 (for most people this would be a state school).

Hope that helps 🙂

I do not believe the last part is true. I was under the impression that AMCAS tags your app with the reapplicant tag if you have been verified in a prior cycle. Every school to which you apply will see that you are a reapplicant, even if this is the first time you've applied to a particular school. Not having applied to that school before doesn't change the reapplicant status. This is what AMCAS told me when I called a couple of weeks ago. I'm also a reapplicant.

No, this is not true. Only schools you have applied to previously will know that you are a re-applicant. For schools that you have not applied to, you will be a first time applicant. However, most schools will require you to answer the question "have you previously applied to medical school?" on their secondaries anyway. That is how schools you are applying to the first time will find out whether you have applied before. Regardless, most schools you are applying for the first time will treat you as a first time applicant to their school.

I am a reapplicant this cycle and this is the Info I got from emailing more than 10+ schools.

Got it thanks. So if I take the MCAT on July. My app (Primary + Secondary) will only be looked at in August right. They won't look at my primary without an MCAT?

That is correct. AMCAS reviews and verifies your primary. THEN sends it toneachschool you select. THEN schools individually send you a secondary. Some schools screen before sending a secondary, some do not. It's not an automatic process.

Nooo you mean this first-day neuroticism is going to continue for 6 more days?! D:

I think people are getting a little carried away with this. You won't get rejected from any schools because you didn't apply in the first couple weeks.
